Guest
I've got a chance to buy a Zercom Colorpoint from an uncle of mine real cheap. One year old, everything's in perfect shape. He's moving and has no use for one. I'm more familiar with the Vexilars, but don't have the money for one.I guess I'd like to hear from a few Zercom owners how they like their colorpoint. Ely Lake Expert
soldier,I have a zercom colorpoint and I like it. As far as reading fish, it is very similar to the vexlar. It picks up the bottom, your bait, and fish very well. The deepest I have used it is in 50 feet of water and it will read up to 160 feet. So you should not have a problem with depth. The only problem I have noticed is when there is a vexilar in a hole within 5 feet of you, you screen will get messed up. If it is a good deal, I would recomend buying it.Ely lake expert
Guest
Before this weekend I would have recommended purchasing the Zercom. This weekend my flasher decided to stop working. The screen no longer spins. It died after about 2 1/2 years. I had one of the originals I think, or at least that is what the Hummingbird rep was trying to tell me on the phone. He said that the others work just fine, but I don't buy it. I used a vexilar fl-8 for the rest of the weekend. I really liked how the zercom had more seperation between lures and fish, I found it really hard to read if there were any fish with the vex. I was in a 2 man trap with 4 lines down crappie fishing on URL and the 4 lines' lures took up the bottom 4 feet of the lake on the vex screen. I never knew if there were fish there, which was kinda inconvenient, that never would have happened with the Zercom.I think I am going to go with the fl-18. Sounds like the zoom feature will be real nice once they get the kinks out.The Zercom worked great for 2 1/2 years, but after seeing it die on me I dont know if i could see myself buying a new Zercom, especially when Vexilar has branded itself with such a popular name and an almost complete control of the market (with the exception of the clearwater classic). Mille Lacs Guy
A friend of mine had his Color Point stop working also. It was about 3 years old and it just quit working one day this winter.
Duck-o-holic
ELW-- Hope you had another licensed angler with you on URL I agree about the better seperation on a Colorpoint than an FL-8... and also have to admit that I too, am interested in upgrading from my Colorpoint to an FL-18! I broke the handle on my Colorpoint, and used my partners FL-18 on LOW this weekend (Thanks Scotty!). I am now hooked on it with the split screen and improved seperation! Walleye Soldier-- The Colorpoint sounds like a great deal, and if you're not looking to spend the $ for a FL-18, I'd scoop it up fast!! ghotierman
Sounds like a deal, if you can't beat the price...snap it up. Zercom has been pretty good about warranties and service. The separation is a key feature. There is the issue of interference with the Vexilar's...that's probablly due to the 600 watts of power. Convenient sno-pak included also..good luck and good fishing! Guest
Duck Guy-Yes I did have a partner with me in the fish trap, sorry I didn't clarify that. Does anyone know if the FL-18s that are for sale at Galyans or Gander Mountain have been called back?
nunzio
I've also owned a Colorpoint and this was the third year....mine still worked just fine. The interference from the Vexilars was the reason I traded mine in for the fl-18.I will say that I really enjoyed my Zercom and was impressed with the seperation. It's a great machine if you fish by yourself. After reading a couple of the above posts, I'm even more glad that I traded up. -nunzio
Guest
I have use a color point for about three years now, when it works it works great, lately it has been showing solid from 0 to about 5 feet or so off of the bottom, no matter how the gain is set. I have used a couple of fl-8's and have liked them better. But for the right price the color point would probably be allright.
Polar Bear
Hey Soldier, If the colorpoint is cheap enough take it. You should know that they are no longer being made. The new parent company has decided to drop them completely from their product line. My buddy has had a very difficult time getting his unit factory serviced just this month. He sent it in twice now and is still having trouble. On the up side: they really do work well and the target seperation is not equaled by any other manufacturer out there. I still like mine but must admit that if I knew they would be discontinued I would have bought a vex instead.Bottom line: I saw one on HSOList go for $150 so I'd only offer $100 to $125. fishtrap2
I LOVE my color point. I wouldn't trade it for a vexilar (I can almost hear the gasping). I know a majority of you all are vex fans, but the zercoms work great.
cmpeterson1
I own 3 colorpoints.Reps at ice show 2yrs ago told me,new company was going to improve the units.YA RIGHT !!!! they are more sen.then VEX.(target sep.)But I'll be replacing them with 18's. 3-16 had 1 colorpoint shut down then start up again, all night long.???????????? jig-em
SoldierIf the price is right, go for it. I have had a Colorpoint for several years and the only drawback, so far, is, like the other folks say, is the interferernce with FL-8's. The color separation is outstanding. If mine [PoorWordUsage]s out, then I guess I'll be buying the FL. jig-em
Guest
cmpeterson1:That is exactly what mine did before it died. It would stop and then start up after about 3-10 seconds, really annoying. This happened for probably 20 hours of use before it died. Good Luck!
Guest
Thanks for the advice guys. I didn't know much about them until now. Boy, for a discontinued item, they still want quite a bit for one at cabelas and reed's. I think if the price is right, I'll buy it. If he wants too much for it, it sounds like I'm better off getting a vex. Happy fishing
cmpeterson1
Like I said,I own 3 colorpoints. When Jeff Zernov sold the company ,to push Aqua-view.The new company did'nt think the flasher market was worth the time.Vex has been around what 20-25yrs? mn. company, they know what the fishermen want.I will move on to the Vex,but for now I'll have them fixed! Here's a little test.Take a 3/8-1/2oz pimple, lay it on the bottom, say 25'.How high do you have to lift off the bottom, before you see it on screen? You will see the pimple before it is standing upright, still touching bottom with the colorpoint.Vex is the top dog by far, with the split screen.BUT, they can still improve it more.my .
loadmaster
Just noticed this thread, I have had mine color point for three years, no probs, love it at least I do not have to buy and accs. to see the dail or use a coffee can on the screen I think this is the best advantage over the VX8 you can see the darn thing in any light condition
MikeYager - Suzuki
This is my third year and I also have used on my boat during the summer. It still works great and I do like it. The only issue is interference. If there is another flasher nearby the display shows it. Doesn't matter if its a vex or another colorpoint. That is the only issue I have with it.
