Cleaning tent camper tent material?

The outside of the tent material on my pop up camper is getting kind of grungy looking. What's a good product to use to clean it up?

I can't remember the name of the product, but if you call Hilltop Trailer Sales in Mpls they would be able to tell you (I am sure any camper sales place would know what it is called) But it is a product that is meant for this and works GREAT.

It helps to identify what type of canvas it is before you clean it. If it is a cotton sunforger type canvas like most camper canvas, you need to be careful what you use to clean it. Too much bleach or anything containing too much acid or detergent can do more harm to the canvas than good. Try a mild soapy warm water solution (like Ivory liquid) with a small amount of ammonia or lemon juice or vinegar added first. Scrub the soapy mixture into the dirty area with a soft brush - leave it sit for a few minutes and rinse with clean water.

To restore water repellancy, use a silicone based water repellant spray such as Aqua-tite. There is a commercial stain remover available, which I don't believe contains any chlorine, called Oxi-Clean - check ingredients before using - it may contain acid.

If the canvas is a synthetic, you can use chlorine bleach with no ill effects to the canvas.

Search for a product called Amazing Roll-Off. It was developed for cleaning sails for sailboats. It's a water activated cleaner, and works great. I use it on my boat cover and bimini top all the time.

bmc- just bought a new 2007 jayco pop-up, it states in the manual not to use any detergents, soaps or solvents since they remove water repellency, fire retardants and damage the surface and color. they recommend using a damp cloth or sponge with water. I'm looking into using a product called 303 which they sell at ace in rapids. cheney from the S.O. swears by the stuff. I'm going to look into warranty info before i use anything. rob
