Cooter,

There was a great article on it a month or so ago in In-Fisherman (their annual mulit-species issue). Lots of ideas for rigs. If you haven't seen it, I would suggest checking it out.

I personally have never caught one.

I think that they're just primarily fish eaters and have caught them on hard baits. A big over four foot long one, bit into my 2 inch crankbait once. That monster swam and then did a midair acrobat and managed to spit my crankbait back at me. I usually sight fish, toss a rapala size 9 - 11 check to see if they'll bite.

I've caught one on a 9" Grandma bait and that thing came off the hooks soon as it hit the bottom of the boat - talk about tough, bony mouths. I've talked to people fishin the same lake with rapalas and the general reports are lots of hits but few hook ups.

I've heard of fishing for them with a piece white nylon rope. You just fray one end and when they bite it the fibers get caught in their teeth. It is supposed to work better than hooks.

i have heard the same thing from a guy that use to fish them in HotSpotOutdoors.
