Mexico Report

Just back from Cabo for a few days of fishing. Overall for the week the fishing started off slow, skunked on our first charter on Wednesday the 27th, not a single tail to be spotted. It seemed everyone else was pretty close to the same. After a bummer trip we mustered up another trip with a little faster boat to get us 40 miles out.

The Marlin Master IV topped out at 68MPH

The day went pretty good from the get go, 2 lines in the water working on the third and snap, fish on!

We chased tail for about another 4 hours seeing over 20 Marlin within 30 yards of the boat. We had 3 get off, also had one of the largest striped I have ever seen get on and go airborne for about 2 minutes until it landed on the leader and snapped it. Overall there were alot of Marlin congregated in the area we were in and we had it to ourselves for several hours before the rest of the Cabo fleet arrived. Captain said with the full moon the fish are less likely to hit as they fed all night. The early morning was pretty prime then after that you could throw anything at them and they would just swim away. We turned over to Tuna after that. Here is a pic of a skipjack that was released All in all we landed 1 marlin, 4 tuna, 1 skip jack and a stray mahi. Tried to temp 3 mako's but couldn't get them to go. The first two Blue's were taken this past week as the water is a bit warmer this year then in past, one tipped the scales at a guestimated 400+ lbs.

Sounds like you had fun ...great pics !!!! did you think about stuffing that charter boat in your suit case and bring it back to Lake Superior ????? We were in PV back in feb but talked about next year going to Cabo or Acupulco ,,,some day I would like to get into fishing like that

Hey Cheffrey; welcome home to this miserable weather! Betcha wish you coulda stayed another week:) I figured you'd be up against it this week as the reports have really tapered off. Did you fish Pisces the first day you were skunked? Where did you find the other boat? Outboards are rare enuf down there, never seen the likes of that boat in the harbor. Do you have contact info? What did you pay? Just might have to look at them when I get down there the end of May. Anyway, it's always good to spend a wek in Cabo, eh?

Traveler, look up Marlin Masters in Cabo, they are a modest fleet of 6-7 boats with a guy from Atlanta owning it. Nice little store front in the shopping mall near picante`. That boat ran 600 all inclusive, started at 700. They sell it cheaper as it is not as comfortable but to me its the best experience I have had. The other boat was the Marisol II, Father in Law wrangled it in a timeshare presentation for 250 for 7 people. More of a whale watching trip than anything. The Marlin Masters plan to start a Kayak program for Marlin on the fly. Sounds crazy but they should be set up next year.

Cool! I've seen a couple articles about the yak fishing; I'll be all over that when they get going. I know theres an outfit up on the cape that does it now. I'll check out MM; not surprised on the timeshare setup boat:( I did that once in Mazatlan, same story.

I fished out of a very similar Fountain with triple 225 Optimax Merc's. We had to travel 60 miles into the gulf off the coast of Louisiana to fish the Oil Rigs and that thing halled some serious A$$.

I thought we had the fastest boat out there until we pulled up on another Fountain that had Quad 250's on the back.

Great photos! I have a trip planned to Zihuantanejo next January and was wondering if anyone has ever fished out of there and can recommended any boats or captains? I have never been there. I have looked around on the Internet some but have a hard deciding or weeding out the less creditable ones.

I have fished with Captain Santiago and his brother Adan on the Gitana 1 and 2. They are both pangas but they catch a lot of fish. I've caught a lot of sailfish with them.
