New Flasher

Hey Guys I just got Kitchen Clearance to purchase a 2nd flasher for ice fishing. I currently have an fl 18 that I am very happy with. What are your thoughts on the fl 20 versus the marcum products?

You're opening up one of the most popular debates on this (and any other fishing) HSOforum. I'd recommend getting out with people who have an FL-20 and an LX-5 and see them in action and learn about the benefits of each.

The LX-5 was my choice and is an excellent unit.

There isn't much difference between the fl18 and the fl20. Mostly cosmetic.

I've got the lx3tc and it works great for every kind of fishing I do. The lx5 is more than I need. You can talk to Gary as I sold him an lx3tc. IMO the Lx5 is the cream of the crop.

Did I say no difference? No.

Did I say all cosmetic? No.

Did I say it was a piece of dump? No.

Did I say I hate Vex? No.

Do I like Vex? Yes.

Do I like Marcum better? Yes.

Do I know SweepT and know what kind of fishing applications he will be using this for? Yes!

I like the Marcum better. It has more power which gives better target separation. I think the color is better(crisper). It has adjustable zoom to any depth in the water column(think Games Lake crappies T). 12 levels of interference rejection. Automatic digital charging system. Self aligning transducer.

I've fished the fl 18 and the fl 20 as well as both Marcums I mentioned earlier. While I like the Vexilar I love the Marcums.

This is basically a Ford Chevy debate on this site. Nobody actually wins the debate but a lot of people wind up getting pizzzzzzzed.

If you are going to upgrade go check out the Vex fl 20, Marcum LX3 and LX5. You can't go wrong with any of them as they will all help you on the ice.

As for me I love my Marcum LX3.

If you plan to fish together with both flashers I'd get the 20 because you can get rid of the interference. The marcum will give lots of interference to the 18 from my experience. Both the LX5 and FL20 are great units so you should be happy with either

FWIW - I got an LX-5 this year, and fish with buddies with FL8 and FL20. While we all saw a bit of interference at times, we all were able to get rid of it, and could fish side by side with no problems.

I agree with Corey, the 20 is a nice step up from the 18. The night viewing mode is great for weekend excursions in the permanent, and the low power mode is great for shallow weeds. Not to mention the flat screen is 12% larger than the other units, and has double the viewable angle.

As for interference. You should be able to get it all out, no matter what unit you have, or what unit you're fishing next to...

I have never used the FL-20 but I do own a LX5 and it is a great machine. Yes, you can fish with any together. Here is another post you can look at.

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
    • I went ahead and watched some of the MLF coverage.  Wheeler didn’t make the cut but the bigger story was the Poche/Avera fallout.   Kinda funny listening to both sides of the story and putting together the scenario, reading between the lines.
