Getting transfered to Omaha, Help!!

Recommended Posts

Lots of public land, lots of lakes, ponds, etc. Tons of great shopping, Cabelas, Bass Pro, Scheels, Sportmans Warehouse (coming soon), etc, etc. Great city, crime is so-so, but they host the CWS (College World Series), got the best zoo in the US, and the restaurant business is alive and well. Centrally located to a lot of different things. Couple hours from KCMO. 45 minutes to Lincoln if you are a Husker fan, or are willing to be.

If you have been living in Duluth then you are in for some sad times. Big downgrade. I'd try and figure out some way to stay up north if I were you. I mean Omaha is a good city(I grew up there), as far as that area of the counrty goes But I'd do anything to be able to live anywhere in MN, especially the Duluth area.

Well I live in Omaha and grew up in MN and went to college in Duluth/Superior.

Omaha is a wonderful town. As stated the College World Series, zoo, restaurants, all top notch.

Winter, is 2 months shorter and the air is damper, feels colder. Windier.

Summer, Hotter than all get out. Humid. My first couple summers about killed me.

Golfer? Some of the best in the midwest and cheap. The Cox Classic is played here every year. Old nike tour event for those looking to play PGA.

Hockey, Omaha Knights - Calgary flame farm club.

U- Neb- Omaha Mavs- Div I hockey

River city Lancers- USHL

I love Omaha. Duluth was my youth and wins for its hunting and fishing opportunities.

However, Omaha his heads and tails above Duluth in city quality and quality of life. It ain't even close.

If you have more questions let me know.

As others have said Omaha is a good city to live in. You can get anywhere in town in 30 minutes, and there's a good amount to do. Our zoo is one of the best in the country, and they're adding new things there all the time. If you have kids, it's a great place to spend a day... Triple A baseball across the street with the Royals' farm team, and just a 45 minute drive to Lincoln where you can see some great college baseball in the spring, and American Association games in the summer, in one of the best college/minor league parks in the country. I guess they have a football team down there too wink.gif

The area lakes are fishable, Zorinsky and Cunningham aren't bad to put the boat on for a weekend day. I make a couple weekend trips up to Yankton, SD (2.5 hours) and fish Lewis and Clark and the Missouri below it. Some good walleyes there, and monster cats. Right below the dam you can see the sturgeon jumping, quite a site. The SD side has some excellent camping facilities, the NE side isn't terrible, but just not as nice.

We're still not that far from MN. The trip I make to Lake Vermilion is about 9 hours, but there's some nice lakes closer where a 3-day weekend trip is possible.

All-in-all, it's a pretty good location. The heat the first summer will kill you, but it won't be long before you laugh a little when you're back up north where 85 is a hot day.

Oh, and if you like beef, there's no better place in the country to buy steaks. Make a trip to Just-Good-Meats and you'll find some of the best quality and cheapest cuts of meat.

The nicest thing about Omaha over Minnesota though IMO, is that you can buy beer in the grocery store. laugh.gif No Grain Belt or Schmidt's round here though.

Yeah, and you don't have to buy it before 8:00. Omaha's a nice town. I preferred Lincoln, but maybe that was because of the local football team...

Grew up in Arlington, worked in Fremont and shopped in Omaha. Honestly, I didn't like Omaha. I prefer the open spaces away from the hustle and bustle, which is something yo may wnat to look into if that's your cup of tea. You can get out of the big city but still be close if you decide to live in Arlington, Elkhorn, Blair or a few others. I still have lots of friends down there - all live in Arlington and commute to the big O. Most would move up here in a heartbeat if they could find jobs that pay what they are used to making now.

The shopping is great - restaurants are spectacular - my personal favorites are the Spagetti Works downtown, the French Cafe, and of course Carlos O'Kellys (sp)

I never did much fishing in the Omaha metro, but did plenty of trips to DeSoto Bend, Fremont Lakes the Missouri River and out to Summit Reservoir. The hunting is fantastic. You can typically just go and ask a farmer for permission to walk some terraces for pheasants. Most are more than happy to let you on to their land. If you're a deer hunter, you're gonna be in heaven at the size of those corn fed deer down there!!

That was another thing I liked when I was in NE... You could drive out of town and be in the middle of nowhere in about five minutes.

The deer are huge. We usually get a couple in the 200# range every year (and they're does!) and a 300# buck is not that uncommon.

Just watch out for the wind.
