Wheel Houses Built to travel

slotlimit

Question

Does any company make a wheel house that is meant to travel down the highway for lots of long trips. I just seen another guy at red lake who pulled his Ice Castle up and he said about five miles up the road the wheel started to bow and break away from the frame. I have looked at a few of these fishhouse and have yet to see one with an axel that goes all the way through. I know lots of people have had no problems. But it doesn't take a genius to see it could easily be a problem with the way the tires are mounted to the fishhouse. If you were just going to take it to the local lakes and move it around a couple times a year it would probably last forever. I'm talking someone who would be pulling it off everytime and taking it home. I need something that can take the pounding of todays highway. I also don't want to have to take the tires off once I'm on the lake.

Just cause it doens't have a solid axle doens't mean its an inferior design. What you are talking about is called a torsion axle and it works just fine. The only reason I can see a trailer frame failing is if its overloaded. Sometimes people buy a frame and build the house themselves or have a shell made but they add too much weight in the interior and the gear they are packing into the house.

Any commercially made trailer is designed to be DOT legal and safe to operate on the highways. If it couldn't withstand the trip to Red then I would be talking to the manufacturer.

The best thing to do is get the ehaviest duty setup you can afford and build within its ability.

Sounds like what I'm looking for. Did you build it your self or by it from someone? If so where? Who?etc.

It has a three inch tube that runs completely through the frame. The axle runs all the way through inside the tube. I had a welding shop install some ATV tie downs for me and they raved about the way it is built. Made by Hayfield Industries and there are some pictures on their web page.

My buddy, who is an engineer for bobcat, was with me and he took a look at it for the guy. When we were on the way out to the fishhouse he wa the one who told me to never buy a fishhouse like that for what I want to use it for. He said those fishhouse are not ment to be pulled down highways. They are ment to be pulled to a lake and moved around the lake not to travel up and down the road for a 1000 miles a year. You don't see boat trailers built like this and that is how I would be using my fishhouse. I don't feel like spending thousands of dollars on a new house just to leave it out on the lake and have someone destroy it or steel it. I also so don't feel like fixing after a couple years of use.

I looked at the web site and it looks like a nice house pretty bare though. I also looked at the pictures but it doesn't show the picture of the frame. The opening back doors are exactly what I would like to load the ATV. What is the price on these?

Slotlimit,

I have a trailer of what your looking for with solid axles from wheel to wheel for the exact reasons you talk about. I had one built to my design. grin.gif Here's the link from the topic I had with pics when I posted earlier on this site:

Use Google instead of Yahoo or MSN and you should find it easily. I couldn't find it at Yahoo at all. That design is manufactured by more than just Hayfield though.

Slot Limit, my number is in the other thread, give me a call if you want area code 218 and I'll tell you where and who can put one together for you. Dont be surprised to see mine listed here for sale next year, I want to attempt another design. crazy.gif

I had the prices written down and can't find them now. I think the 16' is only about $300 more than the 12'. They sell them studded with insulation and I had to pay them to build the box and panel it. To answer your question I pulled the paneling loose at the top on the walls and taped my wiring to the studs between the screws and then reattached the panels. I had them put a pull string in for me when they paneled it so I could pull more wires in from the floor to the ceiling. It is easy to access the wiring for the 12V lights to add lights if ya want. I pulled wires for my computer fans and for my stereo speakers.

They don't make them with a side door, but there is an RV manufacturer a few blocks from them. They might take it there for you and have one installed. These guys build these to keep from laying guys off in the winter and they only build about 20 to 25 per year. It isn't their main business. You need to call them and talk to Arlyn.
