Ice Fishing for Stream Trout

Guest

Recommended Posts

Next month I'll be heading to one of Minnesota's designated stream-trout lakes for the first time, trying to catch a trout through the ice.
Those of you who have done this:
(1) What would you consider the essential bait and tackle to use, and
(2) What is your favorite technique? TIA

ALOT OF GUYS USE WAXIES BUT I'VE HAD REAL GOOD LUCK WITH SALMON EGGS RIGHT ON THE BOTTOM (8-15ft). USE VERY LIGHT TACKLE AND SET THE HOOK FAST WHEN YOU SEE THE BOOBER GO. I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO THE CHASKA COURTHOUSE POND!

I JUST CALLED FISHERIES FOR CARVER CO. (952-826-6771) AND THEY SAID LAST WINTER WITH ALL THE SNOW CAUSED THE DIE OFF. LACK OF OXYGEN I GUESS. ANYWAY, THEY STOCKED 1,000 RAINBOWS FROM LANESBORO ON NOV 15 SO THERE SHOULD BE SOME ACTION THIS YEAR.

Four things have worked well for me.

1. Maggot on a small Ice fly.
2. Small Jigging Rap or Nils Master.
3. Silver or Gold Jigging spoons
4. Small Maribou Hair Jigs

I always have a deadstick with the maggot in one hole. In the other hole I am constantly switching every couple of minutes. I also will move fairly frequently if nothing shows up for 15 minutes or so. The best fishing tends to be the first weekend. I suggest 2lb test and be ready to back real.

For the most part, stockers put into an un-natural setting usually spend their time cruising specific depths.
One of the stock ponds in ROchester,MN you can guarentee yourself fish very shallow or through out the system just below the ice.

Take a bright day to peer down your hole. Give it some time, and you'll see them cruise by in packs.

Good luck !!

Before you folk start chucking ice chisels, or skimmers towards my direction ,listen to this. Use freshly killed minnows on an ice fly, under a float, or not.Take a small container filled with salt water to dunk your small minnows in,killing the minnows by dunking them in the salt, and then put them on the hook. I actually did this on a metro trout lake, was checked by a DNR employee that said as long as the minnows were dead, it was legal.I caught many brookies doing this. I should add that I killed my minnows at my truck, parked off the lake, not on the ice.Don't bring the minnows on the ice, or you might get a ticket. Fresh meat will do it to those trout every time.

Marmooskaman,
You let the cat out of the bag buddy!
He right, this is what my clients and I have been doing for trout throught the ice for several years now. Another way is using "do jigger" spoons in blue/ chrome or Chartruse/chrome. I usually pump these about 3-6 feet off the bottom. Hang on because if the fish are agressive that day, they will absolutly hammer it.
Good luck

Thank you all for your input. Keep those bair and tackle suggestions coming.

Just wondering... what are the best kind of minnows to use (after giving them their salt-water execution, of course).

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
