leechmann
XHC- you can quit trapping when ever you see that the critters in your area are starting to get rubbed. By this, I mean that the guard hairs in the area of the hips is missing and it looks fuzzy there. Just the under fur left. I see that the red fox on the fur auction went pretty low, at least mine did, $21.00. I sold a yote up there too, it was a real big one, but the color was off. It sold for $23.00, Pretty Sad. I think at those prices, a guy has to think of saving some gas money, and pull the pin. I'm going to give it up in about a week. I think Fishermann wanted to catch 100 reds, and I think he did it. fishermann222
ok boys back from the hunt. Before we took off this morning I pulled 3 nice reds out of the traps, happy they are still good, and as long as they are I will keep going. I will post the musk ox pics and story on a new thread. leechmann
Hey Fishermann, congrats on wackin a hairy cow. I imagine you have some work ahead of you getting that beast ready for the freezer. Nice pic's .I sold 2 fox on the nafa sale, and I have to say I was very disappointed. The fox, both Jan. fox sold for $21.00 a piece. I know they weren't the best fox, but I thought they were better than $21.00. I also sold that Jan. coyote and got $23.00. What a shame. Wish I could take it back and get it tanned. Good thing I don't do this for the money. On the up side, I sold a grey fox for $51.00, what a shocker. Tomorrow the beaver and the bobcats sale. I spent the day redoing my whole line. I'm going to give it 1 more week.
fishermann222
grey fox are through the roof. man i wish i was sitting on those instead of reds. That is what I figured was going to happen. Looks like my mind is made up on where I am going to send mine off too. I just hope I manage to get 30 average. Hopefully they don't lower their prices because they saw nafa also.yep I have some work to do on that ox. I will take care of the straps and loins, and cut the ribs tomorrow. the brisket, rump and quarters will wait until the next weekend. Backbone is already cut up for soup. J48jake
Hey leechman, what's in the plastic bags in those skunk pics, and what are u using as bait for all those skunks?
leechmann
Jake, after I dig the bed for the trap, I put two snadwich bags down in the bottom. It keeps the dry dirt dry. It doesn't allow the dry dirt to wick the moisture up out of the ground. Then I bed the trap in the dry dirt. These traps will work, guaranteed no matter how cold it gets. The only thing that hangs you up is when it snows, and then the sun heats the snow up on top of the dirt. It causes it to melt a little bit, and forms a crust of ice. Once it snows, I sweep off, all the sets and cover them up with new dry dirt. I'm using gusto for lure. When those stinkers wake up from their sleep, they will be attracted to anything that smells, they are pretty hungry at that point. They would probably even eat my wifes cooking. Man rats, otter, red fox, and marten all sure took a dive.I got one red today. I have half the line pulled. Bad weather yesterday and today. I have a buddy coming out to ox hunt this weekend so i will be without a snowmobile. Season is winding down, time to start fishing for dollies and hunting ptarmigan soon. I caught my cats in dirthole sets and I snared them. I haven't caught anything in 4 days now. Couple more days and I'm going to call it a season. fishermann222
I am done for the year. I may shoot a few yet if I see some good ones. I would not mind getting a few good ones and skin them with the feet, turn the ears and split the lips and hang on to in case I get a good offer. Other than that I am done. I will pull the traps this weekend. they are all covered by a foot of snow. I am sending some off to the ATA auction next week. Hoping to average 35-40. Just got off the phone with the director and he thinks it won't be a problem because the numbers are way down.

leechmann
Just checked my traps after work. I had a big critter pull out of a 1.75 victor. It pulled one side of the trap's jaw out of the hole. The area was so packed down, I couldn't tell what is was. It was held for a while as the area was torn up in the trap circle. Jake, I'll get those pic's of the snares soon. Ran out of time tonight.
J48jake
Thanks Leech, I am in no big hurry. Also I was wondering what you guys use as a firearm? I was looking at getting a Walther P22 for target practice and to use for small game and trapping. Let me know what you guys think.
