  1. Hunted river bottom tonight and the skeets are about as bad as I have seen them. I had to put on a hood net just to walk to the stand but I got up there and there must have been a hundred skeets buzzing around my hood. I turned my thermacell on and it took about 15-20 mins and then I could lift my hood up. I have been skeptical about the thermacell after using it this summer fishing but I find that if I lay horizontal and give it time it does clear the skeets out. (Plus the little smoke cloud is a pretty awesome wind teller!) So long story short I had a doe come within about 10 yards and could have cared less. I practice drew on her and she froze broadside for a good minute. Always fun to just play with the little ones. So after that I had not had any bugs on me and I thought maybe they had moved on so I shut it off. within 5 minutes they were all over me. Turned it back on and 15 minutes later I was good again. I'm sold now!
  2. Just got back from our yearly trip out there and we came home with just under 200 fish for 4 boats in three days! 3. Anyone hear any reports for Winthrop? Headed out this weekend!
  4. Did pretty well out of North Point last weekend. Netted 157 fish for three boats in 3 days. First time I have seen so many kings being caught! Biggest in our crew was about a 20 lb'er but most of our fish were nice Coho's. It seemed the Cohos on top had some nicer size to them then the ones we pulled deeper on the downriggers. E-chip Clown flasher with a bloody nose fly worked pretty well.
  5. Heading out to Winthrop Harbor next weekend to chase Coho's! Launching out of North Point, I hear the Coho's are already running.
  6. Wondering what people think of ground blinds nowadays? I have been a life long "tree hunter" but I just bought the intimidater ground blind my ameristep. Seemed like a good overall blind for the price. Anyone heard anything about this blind? Also if anyone has any tips for hunting out of a ground blind this archery season feel free to share. I am looking forward to trying the new blind out this week w/ my 5 yo daughter.
  7. I am looking for any mounts or tanned pelts someone would be willing to donate for the firearm safety class I teach. Our next class is next month in Princeton. I live in Milaca and would be willing to pick things up or possible pay for shipping. You can also deduct any donations off on your taxes. Thanks Jake Ulm
  8. Tell him great job! Brings back great memories from when I was a kid. Cant think of a better summer job! Its great to see a young man work hard and get what he wants.
  9. Thanks guys, Starting to stockpile now and plan on setting all my stuff out in 2 weeks. Crazy that it is almost fall already! Best time of the year.
  10. I have heard diff things about baiting, some say pile a bunch of logs over the bait, some say just leave it out there. And yes I am in a No quota area, only about a 1/4 mile though
  11. I have a bear I have seen a few times down by the river I live on. I was going to set up a bait station in August. Wondering if anyone has any pics? I already have a gas station lined up that is giving me all the day old doughnuts. Any help would be great, I am an avid hunter and trapper just never had the chance to try for a bear. Thx Jake
  12. I like the mb450's as a multi species trap. they are a little on the small side for yotes but I have gotten a few in them and they are solid. I am in central mn and I think I could catch anything in these things. I ran dukes both 1.5's and 1.75's but I would have problems with them after awhile. Every now and then I would have a bent part (mostly the chain and swivel which you could change out easily) but I bought some mb450's last year and I love em. Plus MN trapping supply puts a decent amount of money towards the MN trappping Assoc. So I always like putting money his way.
  13. Most bait the trap or I should say place bait near the trap in a set. Lots of good info on here if you are thinking about picking it up. Also check the National trappers assoc. for tons of great info. Lastly I carry a .22 handgun because I believe it is one of the more humane ways to dispatch the animal. There are other ways but I am sure there are plenty of "Anti's" that scroll through here so I wont go into detail. Ideally if water is nearby a drowning set works very nice also.
  14. I sure hope I dont have any of those ash beetles, I am pretty sure it was a woodpecker now, but I have no idea what he was trying to get at.
  15. Just wondering if anyone has tried something like this. I found it on the Fur Harvesters site and I live on a river that stays open for most of the winter. Looking for some new options for sets.
