Ice Fishing line question

Historically I've always purchased my fishing tackle based on sales recommendations but have come to question how these choices impact my success rate for catching fish.

Is there a significant difference in the brand/type of line people use for ice fishing? If so, what brand/type would you recommend for walleye fishing in depths between 15' to 30' of water with medium water clarity?

I have been using the new firelines, 2,3,4# lines have had good success with them. I'll also tie on a piece vanish line for clear water lakes. The mono also works if you change baits often, easier to cut the tag off.

Have not tried power pro lately, I was not happy with the line seemed to break more then other lines. That was only 2-3 yrs ago. hope they changed.

For the situation you described, I would probably select a superline such as Fireline or PowerPro for walleye fishing.

With medium water clarity, the fish shouldn't be too line shy, although a short 2' fluoro or mono leader wouldn't hurt.

For jigging in that deeper water, 30' or so, you'll appreciate the fact that superlines have no stretch. You'll be able to feel the fish sniffing and biting a lot easier. Just remember that your line doesn't stretch so your rod & reel drag will have to absorb the shock (lighten up on your drag a bit).

delmuts,

I'm on Pwr Pro's Pro Staff, here's the skinny on the difference between Ice and say Moss Green. ITS THE SAME LINE!!! Really its just two different colors, and this year the blue is supposed to be a new and improved color of blue to help stand out against the ice.

I primarily have the moss green on most of my ice reels, some of the walleye rods have the ice blue color. There is no break in period with the green line, and I used the blue line this spring a bit while crappie fising just to knock some of the color down a bit.

On some of the Med Hvy rods I even go up to 20 lb on some of the baitcast reels, because I use these on my larger Jigging Raps, and I want to slow the rate of fall while the jig swims. Its still something like 6 lb diameter, and I ll use a 3 ft leader of 10 or 12 lb Vanish.

Actually I do. I have about 10 rod and reels, that I spool diffrently. Use everything from vanish, fireline, power pro, canjun red line, some callcutta line, and soon look to put on some suffix ice magic. Actually have the cajun red line on my latest rod and reel combo. Caught everything from finicky blue gill to some crazy bass. Works well no memory or problems here. Don't know if others do this, but I like to take the diffrent kinds of line with the diffrent colors and by my line test to certain colors. For instance my 2lb test is alway fireline white, 4 lb test is always vanish clear, 6lb test is always cajuan red line, 8lb is blue calcutta line, and 10 lb is greenish blue power line. think I am going to use the suffix to replace my 8lb line that is calcutta. The calcutta line seems to have to much memory.

I primarily use micro ice 2-3# on my ice rods. This season I have debated changing to the power pro, based on the fact that I really liked it on my tournament pike rod this summer. My question though is am I gaining strength, but loosing sensitivity? If not, which I am guessing is the case, can I get away with a 8 or 10# power pro even on my ultra light ice rods?

With Power Pro you will be gaining sensitivity and strength, i use 3 lb fireline ice on panfish rods and 6 lb on walleye rods. I have caught quite a few northerns in the 4 to 6 lb range on the 3 lb line and never been bit off. If you use pp you will want to loosen up your drag a bit due to there being no stretch in the line, the looser drag will make up for their being no stretch. On my summer rods I opt for the power pro but during winter i use fireline crystal ice and i like it a lot, i noticed pp doesn't come with any test under 8 lbs, i wouldn't think you'd have a problem with that on a ultra light rod/reel, i would however put about a 2 ft leader on it with a barrel swivel, berkely vanish is very strong and holds up nicely, 4 lb for pannies and 6 lb for eyes, I put a quick snap on the end of my leader because i am always changing spoons, this minimizes the time spent tying knots and making new leaders.
