3 Deer - 1 Shot

joestack you say it was his land so he knew what was in front and behind the deer....obviously not... if he took an ethical shot and the bullet passed all the way through the deer....how did it magically hit the other 2 deer if they were not on the backside of the doe....he obviously didn't let the doe clear the yearlings before he shot...that is is the unethical part....just because it turned out OK doe not make it ethical or right.

vitalshot5...i guess there are some people in this world that just realize things are only in black and white with no gray area in between. And i am going to have to say it looks as tho you are one of these people.

Just from reading your posts...you are a guy of good morals and ethics there is no doubt about that. Just think that maybe sometimes you need to learn when you should just bite your tongue. Thats all. And by the way i am not angry her or anything, not by any means...this is just a forum for gathering everyones THOUGHTS..and you have your right to your opinions and i have the right to mine. I am just not the kind of guy to go out and tell someone else that their opinion is wrong, and degrade them!

I wasn't born yesterday! Normally, I give people the benefit of the doubt in their fishing or hunting stories, as I am sure we have all heard someone tell an unbelievable hunting or fishing story in our day. While sitting there listening to it, you are thinking to yourself, "yeah whatever"!

But come on, this one believable??? No way...Can't believe it. Personally speaking, I think this guy is maybe looking to sell a made up story for some cash.

Here's my take on it

Knowing that them hunters up der nort of Two Harbors, are blessed with a humble nature, I say the guy took the shot intending to hit all three deer with a single shot. Which he did. No big deal, eh? Justa lika he a planned, eh?

Why? you ask...

Typical Finlander - didn't want to waste any shells! And, like he said, "we got venison". By god dem guys know how to live - let's just hope dey stay out der!

And to those who have trouble believing this story - it's as true as the day is long. Kipp Duncan is an acquaintance, and he was there just after it had all come together - walked out in the woods and had them show him how it had happened. Kipp's a USFWS Federal Warden, not the kind of guy who needs to make these kind of stories up. It's for real.

he killed something that he was not aiming at. Plain and simple. You can't use the theory that because he had legal tags to fill, that it's o.k. If he didn't, we would never had heard about it.

joestack- you cant defend the shooter here. Going just off what is in the story, he did not even know that he hit the other two deer at first. He was obviously not looking beyond the target. Simple physics will tell you that the other deer needed to be standing behind the target deer. How can you stick up for a guy that is being a sloppy hunter like that?

How can i stick up for a sloppy hunter like that??

Easy i dont sit behind a keyboard and type WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE....I am saying good for him he got 3 deer..it may not have been the way you or I would have gone about it...But i am not like you guys sitting here and talking about UNETHICAL HUNTING because there is absolutely not one darn thing you can do about what this guy did. ITS DONE...why cry about this story..I am just sick of hearing guys whine about what other hunters have done and how they would have done just the opposite. Keep it to yourselves...cuz we know THAT everyone on this forum would have done the "RIGHT THING" anyways.

As said before for this guy i am happy for him he got venison for the season!! If you guyd dont like my attitude towards this story...i am sorry but you can keep it to yourself. I am not telling every single one of you guys how you should be feeling i am just saying how i feel right??? So keep it to yourself!!! and all have a Merry X-mas!!! laugh.gif

I have been watching this post and a few of you are right on the money. We should not glorify this situation as we do not want this message to be passed on to young hunters as OK.

As far as telling people to keep their opinions to themselves, grow up. We can all learn something from people's opinions. That is the great thing about forums online. The ability to learn from others. To tell someone to keep it to themselves, makes me think of 7 year old kids saying "get out of my sandbox, go play in your own".

Joe_stack I am with you, it happend get over it... I am not saying that you should take that shot because I was not there, maybe I would have who knows? When a bullet enters a deer alot of things can happen, true or not I have read alot of posts that frankly I think are talk... but I have also read numerous posts/pics in the archery/gun kills and they are many deer with fatal shots to the brisket, gut, hind quarters. It happens just drop it, joe_stack was just saying he was glad it turned out OK for the guy. tongue.gif

Joe and PerchKing I am saying it is great you are expressing your opinions, I am also saying it is great the other people are expressing their opinions. The only thing I said that was negative was about someone telling people to keep their opinions to themselves. We can ALL learn from eachother.

Myself I shot a nice doe with a bow, and 2 nice doe's with my rifle.....all ETHICALLY....no jealousy...I just prefer to use my head instead of my other end to think with.....people wonder how accidents happen...ignorance causes accidents....JOESTACK who's whining.....you gave an opinion and I gave an opinion that was different and you didn't like what I said....too bad....any opinion that is not yours is instantly someone whining...you crack me up.

I'm happy for the guy too that he got his three deer. I don't know that he's a sloppy hunter, although I would agree from the sound of it he made a poor shot choice, but that doesn't mean it was dangerous. For all we know all three deer were in a field at the base of a hill. The two yearlings could have been standing side by side, the entire field clear of anything, when the doe appeared. She may have been moving. The hunter could have swung with her & when he fired was when she was exactly lined up with the other two deer. That would make a poor shot choice, to call it "UNETHICAL" seems pretty high handed, it could be a simple mistake. We are not talking about him shooting people here. I'd bet if there was a person standing where the yearlings were he wouldn't have been shooting, nor for that matter is it really likely the deer would be there, although not impossible.

Now if they were all lined up perfectly & he thought it would be fine to shoot, thinking there's no way he'd hit any more than the front deer, he's got a lot to learn about firearms. There's just not enough info here for us to be passing judgement on him.

The author most likely is a nonhunter, who's not opposed to hunting, & didn't really get that there was anything questionable about the shot, just thought the hunter got lucky.

Come on guys we've read this kind of thing before. It's a great thing to use as a teaching tool, but there's no reason to crucify the guy either. We've all made mistakes & will again.

If he mentioned what kind of bullet he was using, he might get some endorsement money! Talk about performance.

Some of you guys probably also have a problem with hitting two ducks or geese with one shot. Let it go. I congratulate the hunter on his good fortune. If it were me, I would be upset that I filled all three tags so quickly. At least he didn't wound and lose any of the deer.
