Matt Johnson
Thorne Bros has come out with a new handle option for their line of custom rods... It's called the Reverse Locking Tennessee Ice Handle Featuring an all-cork handle with a locking mechanism that holds the reel firmly in place. No more attaching the reel with tape, it locks in place and you have a full cork handle without any plastic touching your hand. Top quality cork and interior reel-seat, designed for ultimate comfort and sensitivity. The option of upgrading to Titanium Framed SIC Guides is also available. These guides are about as lightweight as it gets! The Reverse Locking Tennessee Ice Handle can be available on most rods. Contact www.ThorneBros.com for more info... RobertELee
Those things look great! Might have to get me one of those. They look pretty darn fat also the way a ice rod handle should be.

hanson
I stopped by Thorne Bros last night for Matt Johnson's seminar on using Plastics under the ice and he had to show me this rod. Let me tell you, it is sweet! But that sweetness also comes at a price (about $105) and I wasn't ready to make that investment yet. Close! But not quite ready. Instead, a new 28" Perch Sweetheart and 28" Deadstick found their way into my Revolution teamed up with Tica SS500s. I think I have a disease. On the way out the door, I've already decided that there is a "Real Need" to have the new Perch Sweetheart Outside rod in my arsenal as well. harvey lee
ChrisIt seems like once a guy buys one that yes a disease sets in and now you need more and more of them. They do have some awesome rods.
augernaut
Matt or others - can you tell me how the reelseat/rear cork works? I looked on the TB HSOforum and they have a small pic that shows the rear cork piece pulled away from the reelseat and tightening nut. Do you tighten the nut, then slide the cork over it? Thanks! Matt Johnson
With the Reverse Locking Tennessee, the handle doesn't not come apart, it stays intact. All you do is loosen the back end enough to slide your reel in place and then you tighten it down. The Reverse Locking Tennessee handle is made to the specs of the reel you intend to use with it. The rod builders at Thorne Bros will actually build the handle specifically for the intended reel. You let them know which reel you plan on using with the rod and they will build the handle accordingly. This is about as custom as it gets. You will have a truly balanced rod that will match the reel exactly. We currently have several examples on display and available for purchase at the store in Fridley, MN for anyone interested in stopping in to check them out in person... augernaut
Thanks Matt - you answered my next question too, because with that design, you would have to know the exact length of the reel's foot in order to build it properly.
iffwalleyes
OH NO. Man and just when I was thinking I was running out of Thorne Rods to buy . I might have to look at these the next time I get one. I myself love just the tennessee handle but this is pretty slick custom rod for the reel. Man I hear you Hanson on the disese of Thorne Rods and Tica reels. 4 years ago I bought my first of this combination and now 11 different combinations later most of them look very similar Thorne and Tica's are a sweet set up. I have an occational Shimano on some of my heavier set ups but the day in day out rods have Tica's. All of this started with a recommendation from Thorne Bros to try a Tica reel. Probably the best suggestion I have gotten in a long time.
fisherdog19
I have to admit that I have nothing but Tica's on my ice rigs. I bought my first one back in 2002 when I first started ice fishing at Gander only because it was on sale. I fell in love with the quality, and now use some of there other models for open water. Okuma also makes some awesome reels and have some ice fishing sized models, the only down size is that they run between 60-90 dollars. The Okuma AE10 will be my next ice fishing reel, which will be paired with my first Thorne Bros rod when I get one. I don't like buying rods sight unseen, and I have never made my way to their shop. Until then, I wait .
