Strike Master gas leak

ice_it_06

Question

06 model Lazer Mag Express

Filled it up today for season and noticed gas dripping off the idle screw. Seemed to be originated behind the black part with the (4) star head bolts. My assumption is this is the carb but I'm no 2-cycle mech. Is there a "gasket" on these that go bad or do they tend to come loose ?

First year I have ever dry stored it without stabil or sea foam in in with fresh fuel.

Have had three of these augers and never experienced this leak before!!

Any help greatly appreciated

This does not sound normal. Leak from the gas cap, okay but a gasket on an 06 model.

Call Strikemaster customer service, and get it taken care of right.

I have a Lazer Mag 2001 model and no problems...

Wish you luck...

I'll take the tank off tomorrow and see if those four screws are loose. I assume the black part I mentioned is the carb and was wondering if there is a "gasket" where it mates to the power head that might have dried up seeing there was nothing in the auger all summer.

Have had (three) Strikemasters and never did anything to any of them but put fresh gas a sea foam in them at season end and start every month in the summer.

This one I ran dry and have this leak now upon seasons first fill.

I'm guessing you've got a stuck float in the carb. I had the smae thing happen the beginning of last season and couldn't get it started. Took it into Strikemaster and once they got it started and warmed up it stopped leaking.

Then it could be something different. Mine start but died out right away and I couldn't get it to start again.

Definitely give them a call at 763-263-8999 and ask for their service department.

On one side there is a little diapragm and gasket under that cover with the Torx screws. On the other is the "fuel pump". It is possible that the screws are loose, but more likely that the diaphragm is torn or the gasket is not in right (ie: folded, torn). Easy fix, should be under warranty.

BIG DS:

Thanks for the tips and direction. I'll be doing some Strikemaster tech 101 this afternoon and see what I can find.

Thing ran great last year, I dont know what could have happened. Sitting dry I wouldn't think would do anything but its the first year I drained everything.

Dave:

What I found is a mystery at this point. Left it outside last night so I would not have fumes in the house or the case for it. Went to look at it and start it again this afternoon and I could not see any sign of a leak ?

Started it and ran it for 10 minutes and nothing came out like on Friday morning when I filled it and started first time from summer storage.

I have checked it twice since starting today and can only see a minimul trace of fuel (I think) sweating on the throttle side. There appears to be a "gasket" ( I think) between the aluminum piece mounted to the tank and the black piece that mounts to the engine.

It has a minor flutter and does not seem to "open" up full power so I'm going to toss in a new plug tomorrow and start over.

Fuel was dripping and highly visible yesterday, and today it shows no signs of it confused.gif

My strike master was new at christmas last year. I stored it with a full tank of premixed gas with stabil in it. I had a heck of a time starting it for the first time last week. Every time I pushed the compression release button and pulled on the starter gas would spray from what I thought was the vent on the gas tank. Once I got it started it has not done it again. My guess is that is when the compression locks up there is back pressure in the gas line and it causes it to spray out the carb or the gas tank.

eurolarva:

What model you have ?

I bought a Lazer Mag Express about the same time you bought yours. I'm not aware of a compression release function on mine ?

I use to use stabil or sea foam and just drain the tank at seasons start with fresh gas and had no issues ever.

Last year I drained it all and dry stored it and had this leak issue arise that now seems to be gone or semi self corrected some how.

Ice It,

This is the first time I dry stored mine, too. I'll check into it more tomorrow but I think maybe a gasket is dried out and the fuel expanded it, after we filled 'em. Only thing I can think of. Otherwise, it has run like a champ for 3 years now.

eurolarva you have experienced a hydraulic lock, that was caused by leaving the vent screw tight over the summer and when the fuel expanded it had no place to go but through the carb into the crankcase. I did the same thing as you last season blush.gif I ended up having to pull the plug and crank it several times, man you should have seen the fuel blow out, anyway now I just dont fill the tank prior to storage and leave the vent screw loose.

Glad I was wearing glasses. Because of the lack of ice last year I didnt use it much and just left the gas in. Normally I fog and drain the system but got lazy last year. Would be nice if all two stroke motors ran on the same oil mix. I have been reading some posts here and after I run the gas out I am going to switch oils.

I put in the new plug earlier in the week and have run it for like 10 minutes twice a day. Runs smooth and with good rpm and the leaking gas is no where to be found.

I'll find the correct torx and snug her up as you suggest.

**darn thing two weeks ago looks like it [PoorWordUsage]ed on me when ready to hit the ice, now that it looks like I won't be hitting the ice it runs great mad.gif
