Wanted: Bullheads

Rainman, I bet if you twist on Flashman He might give up his secret spot. LOL We used to get them by the air port in some little pond but I have no idea where that was, I just followed Flashman.

Yep Backwater is correct also the darn Red will not let us use them here. Pike also do like them. For flats just put on a slip sinker and hook them in the tail. They will swim all over looking for that Flatty's dinner plate. Plus they stay alive for a long time then too. If and when you use bull head for Pike where it is allowed, I like to cut off the spines and hook them also in the tail or just under the top spine and use a BIG slip bobber.

Good luck

Ya-U-Betch-ya walleye gobble lots of bullheads, willowcats, baby channel cats, and or baby Flatheads. Spines don't bother them one bit.

I have seen a piggy walleye burp up several bullheads on the boat floor after being netted. Remember a walleye is capable of eating forage up to 30% of it's own size. They eat about anything that gets in their way, if they feel like it.

On certain prairie lakes or river systems bullheads are top forage for walleye. I suspect it has seasonal patterns to when they key in on them the most. On rivers they definitely key in on them in the fall & winter.

I'm noticing a pattern for finding those legal-size bullheads.
Calmer pools below spillways.
We stopped for some between shore-spots up in Osakis yesterday on a hunch. I wanted some free pike bait, and sure enough - in the backwater pools beside the main flowage. It was just a little dam, too, more of a culvert with a spillway. Of the dozen we wrangled in 20 minutes, only two were too big.
Big challenge was getting 'em up and out before a BIG bowfin that was haunting the waters got to 'em. Didn't wanna lose my new ultralight to that beast!

I am in need of some bullhead help. I tried Tuesday night at the coon rapids dam, anoka dam and champlin mill pond with zero results. These spots were all good producers earlier in the summer. Does anyone know of any recent bullhead activity in the metro area? I had also heard that there was someone selling them alongside Hwy 169 just North of Jordan recently? Any and all info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

A Bullhead stand along the hwy! Why didn't I think of that!! Who needs Kool Aid anyway!

Hey KatKrazy welcome to FM! Where do you live? Are you planning on headhunting the Minnesota River? My Bullhead spot is completely dried up so I'll be back to using Chubs and Suckers for now.

WET NETS!

In southern Mn (central) there everywhere!,Albert lea lake is full of them try where the shellrock flows out south (a spot called Juggler)If there not there then the walleye or Channel cats are. (but thats been rare lately). They are also in every creek or river Ive fished south of Owatonna (even in the drainage ditches). All sizes can be had everywhere. Please catch all you can, I hate catching them when Im trying to catch the real fish (Cats or Walleyes). mad.gif

If you realy want them ,I'll save'em and you come get'em (7in or smaller). grin.gif

I havent had any luck useing them (No flatheads around my area?) just Cannels, walleyes(few), and Northerns.
I'll stick (I mean not get stuck!) grin.gif to chubs or shinners. Frogs if I can catch those little F.... I havent had luck using them (frogs) yet either, but I'm confident thell work later when there more scarce in the lakes and rivers.

Thanks for the replies guys. Glad to be aboard. I live on the north side of the cites in maple grove but work in eden prarie. I am planning on hitting the minnesota in shakopee on friday night. We have had good sucess with the bullheads there this year. I love those things. They are so tough to kill, stay on the hook well, stay lively on the hook, and catch fish well. Natures most perfect food? My buddy and I have had good luck on the missippi in our area catching small channels with the tiny bullheads. Fishdog thanks for the offer but I think you live a little to far south for me to drive. I guess I will have to focus my bullhead activity on some new ponds and lakes instead of flowing water that isn't flowing now due to water levels. I guess that means buying suckers for a small fortune in the meantime. Good luck to all!

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
