I install remote car starters all day long and have been for the last 10 years. Any questions feel free to contact me on here and i will be more then happy to help you out.

Newguy - If you can help me out on the situation that I've been trying to explain here, with setting up a starter so my wife can somehow come out to a warm vehicle when she gets done working at the prison, let me know, I'll be down the day I get the post.

The guys are Circuit City in Roseville are putting in a remote start today in my wife's '05 Chrysler T$C.

They got me the part so I can make the remote start programmable, so she can set it to start the car automatically 5-10 minutes before she leaves work.

Kinda hard to get the trasmitter to work through feet and feet of steel and concrete at the prison.

Here's what happens when a home install goes bad

pic1.jpg

I recently had the oppertunity to figure out what went wrong with the home install of a remote starter. The complaint was that the auto headlamps, a/c, other hvac functions, and the remote starter did not work. as it turns out a couple of the wires from the starter where incorrectly installed causing the wiring in the underhood fuse block to fail. Specifically the wire between pin B3 (connector 3) and pin 85 of the auto headlamp relay. Once the fuseblock was replaced as well as correctly wiring the starter everything was working fine!!

Yep, seen it all, thats why I do not work on them when some one would come and want me to fix there auto starter. I just tore it out and sold them a new and put in right. You never know what they fried and once you touch it it is your fault and they want you to pay for it.

So, just out of curiosity, is $350 a reasonable installed price for one of these? That's a one way without the led indicator that it started. The two way would have been about another $100. This is the price I got from the car dealer in town and its what the better half got for Christmas to be installed next week...

Lawdog,

That's about what they are charging everywhere I looked in the Northwest suburbs. Seems to depend alot on vehicle though...$100 to $350 for the install alone depending on the vehicle. I happen to have an '05 Durango which also requires that you "give up" a key. Sounds like they actually have to bury one in the dash or something to get the ignition to unlock. Dealer charges $100 to $200 to make a new key(note..lock and unlock is right on the key). All 5 places I checked have verified this so I assume I am not being misled.

You're not being misled, at least by the install people anyways.

That's technology for you, there's a chip in the key to help prevent auto theft.

Anyways, I had to give up a key for an '05 Town and Country that I had the starter put in as well. $85 for the key, because we just used a regular key, without the lock / unlock fob on the end. At least that'll save you a couple of bucks anyways.

Lawdog, you're in the ballpark. I paid about $500, but that was with the extra timer / temp control installed as well, which was about $225 for the part / intall.

I also had relays for the parking lights installed, along with door locks, and for the auto trunk release installed while they were doing it.

If it were just a basic install with door locks, I could have had it done for about $250, but I've had 6 installed in different vehicles, and they're all such a price range it's hard to tell unless you drive your specific vehicle to each and every shop.
