Sick of trailer rusting?

blue_healer_guy

Question

Thought I would pass this on. My fishouse trailer would always show rust, even after car washing it after every long trip. I assume do to road salt. So I sanded the frame and applied that Rhinoliner tar. Bought a gallon for 40$ and used 3/4 of it on a 16 footer. Alot of work and mess, but hopefully will solve the rusting issues. Would be better to have it done before the house is built. Anyways, just an idea for those who may have similar issues.

I've got a 16' dump trailer that I use for hauling firewood.

It's a 2001.

After 2 years, that lining had started to peel off. Plus, the salt still gets in behind it and then rusts from the inside out.

Now it's to the point where I basically have to strip the entire trailer and have it blasted, fix the spots where the metal has rusted through and repaint the entire trailer.

I guess I may just end up dumping the trailer for alot less right now and let someone else have a winter project.

I hate to burst your bubble, but you may have just caused yourself a very large headache.

Trailer frame corrosion is a real problem. Though my experience is not with ice house frames, I think these problems may be even more extreme. First, if you don't start with the metal completely clean anything you do will simply have corrosion under it, and of course it will peal - you MUST get it clean first.

Two really troublesome corrosion possibilities that I have seen solved. "Turtle-watch" operates ATV's on the beach in salt water splash and salt spray environment - they do a complete service annually including protecting the frame with AMSOIL Heavy-Duty Metal Protector (a thick film spray on synthetic wax-like coating, brownish in color). Any areas where the frame has been drilled and carriers or winch mounted, spraying the inside of the frame through the holes before mounting. These machines are still alive after 6 years of use on the beach.

Boat trailers protected with this, especially the springs, hangers and mounts plus tipping pivots will get the same protection - even in salt water living 5+ years.

AMSOIL product code AMH-SC, comes in a 1 lb spray can. You can order direct through my site.
