Crow River Channels

DARK30

Recommended Posts

I heard from a DNR source about the Channel Cat population of the Crow River. He said during surveys they found good numbers of small to large (8 lb) fish in the system. Along with the Walleyes, this could be well worth exploring.

Anybody else pull any Cats out of this river in the past?

My old work partner used to fish the smaller section of the Crow near his home in Montrose. He would target walleye with jigs and small cranks but often caught more channel cats than eyes. They were not little ones either. Most of his fish would be from 4 to 6lbs.The largest one he got was over 10lbs.I have always wanted to check it out for myself but "so much water, so little time"

The North Fork looks good too and takes on water from some pretty good lakes like Green,Koronis,Washington, and Buffalo Lake. I'm sure there are spots to be found all along both the North and the South Forks.I know there are Channels in the North Fork as it leaves Green Lake/Calhoun near Spicer.

The guy I talked with from the Fisheries Office in Hutchinson was referring to the South Fork. From the dam in Hutch downstream to the confluence with the North Fork at Rockford is the area I am interested in exploring. Then theres also the question...What about above the dam in Hutch which would be the Otter Lake Reservoir.

The Quest Never Ends!!

I usually fish the Crow a quite few times a year. I've fished anywhere from New Germany to Dayton. It offers tons of fishing opportunities. It hosts anything form walleyes, smallmouths, northerns, crappies, sunnies, channels and flatheads. Of course all the rough fish too. Last year fishing the Opener at Watertown dam I caught one of those scaless carp 11lbs. That was fun on a walleye rig. If anybody wants to join me for some canoe trips, or just sitting on shore this spring your sure welcome. Most of my buddies are married with childern.

Good luck

I just happened to talk to someone who has 20 acres on the Crow river just west of Delano. They said they regularly catch walleyes, bass, lots of cats and carp, and they even said they caught a 43 inch muskie in there a couple years ago! I'm gonna be up there in the canoe for sure this year.....

I did a canoe trip down the crow a couple years ago. We got just about everything while we were going down the river. We got tons of channels, walleyes, and smallies. We found a little hole that was filled with cats. It was good fishing the whole way. Thinking about this I think I might have to go back this summer. ><>

Anybody know spots to shore-fish from on the crow south of Buffalo? My 4 year-old likes the boat, but has more patience on shore where he can stretch his legs and wander a bit.

Usually at any brigde crossing the river is a place that you can park and fish. Some spots are private property so just look for signs. I've never made it as far north as you Robert but maybe we can explore this year. I do know some good spots at Watertown, Rockford, Delano, New Germany, Hanover and Dayton. Everyone is welcome to join me, like I said my fishing partners are mostly Married with small childern and working wives.

Good luck

OK. I am new to the sport of catfishing. I have always fished, but never for cats. Anything that pulls back is worth chasing as far as I am concerned. I have a few questions and am too lazy to look in the regs.

Are there any seasons as far as when you can/can't fish for catfish?
I am assuming you don't need a "cat" Stamp or any special license.
When does the Crow usually open up?
Can you get them through the ice?

Thanks in advance and will be pursuing some cats soon.

Hey shoeclerk
No there is no closed season for cats and you do not need a stamp. You can only keep one over 24" and only two of those can be flatheads.
I have cought cats through the ice. This was the first year that I tried it and I think that I am hooked on icing cats.I think the best place to try it is on the Horseshoe Chain near Cold Spring.
If you think that anything that pulls is worth catching your going to end up a cat addict! They do pull!

Small working wives? Like...elves? :cool wink.gif

Yeah, my son gets along really well with girls 1 or 2 years older than him. I don't know why - just does. E-mail me whenever -

Rainman,
You can launck at Watertown, right in the middle of town there is a park and dam. You can launch either below the dam or above the dam. Below the dam can be real shallow and rocky so becareful and it's a very popular shore fishing spot especially in the spring.

Dennis,

Thanks for the info. I will have to give it a shot here reall soon.

Hopefully, the DNR didn't pick up on that otherwise they will have to come out with a carp stamp as well. (which i would be willing to throw five bucks down to let them rip my drag out!)

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
