line question

i've been fishing below a dam on a river for walleye( lots of rocks!) , and have been doing well, but with the cold temps i will have to be switching back to mono line.( i currently use PP , but will have problems with it freezing in the guides soon!) i plan to use 6#, and have vanish clear and solar XT. i hear the vanish has less stretch . true?? line color isn't a problem as the water is still some what dirty. your opinions?

I wouldnt hesitate to go with the solar. Im guessing water is moving quite a bit and murky? This solar will help you see hits, especially in the wind when feel can be difficult. I wouldnt put vanish on a spool. I found it to flop off the reel too much. I would use the vanish on the solar as a leader material if you find fish get spooked by the solar. Tie a 3-4' Vanish leader on with a back to back uni knot. You could maybe even use a small barrel swivel if thats easier for you but I prefer the knot.

Good luck and tel us how it went.

I currently use Trilene Sensation in Solar Green. I mainly fish the Mississippi River where line visibility is generally not an issue.

I was fishing yesterday in the cold weather (High of 32) and has no troubles due to the cold. I do have an occational seagull trap when I am casting light jigs because it is spooling on my reel loosly. I think any line with any form of memory will do this.

I wounder if spooling up with iceline would be a good option. I just might give this a try to test out the castability and fishability it may offer.

In my experience vanish causes lures and fish to vanish. My buddie was spooled up with it on a trip to the Bdubs, big mistake. This was a few years ago, maybe they have changed the formula or something since. I like Maxima Chamelion, very strong and abraision resistant.

Vanish and cold weather are not a good mix. Follow Mike's advice or try Sufix (orange)or Maxima fibre glow (pink. All three work well in cold temps. Mike did throw one gigantic birds nest Sat. I was impressed. Probably 25yds of line. Did my best but couldn't top that one. Word of warning that solar Sensation does seem to attract crappies.

north! i think i found out what you were talking about? i found the "other " spare spool i had for this reeel, so i loaded it with the vanish. i always let the line out on a football field behind the house to relax it. i had coils flying off the reel( and i only load a reel to 75-80% capacity)after hearing what you guys have said, i may not even try it. ( i hate loosing fish!) i think i'll stay with my 1/8 PP high vis. til it gets to cold, and switch to the solar! thanks guys! grin.gif

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
