Slug Question

Recommended Posts

I might come off sounding stupid but I was wondering if you use a choke tube when shooting a slug out of a shotgun. I dont have a rifled barrel....just using my Browning Gold Fusion or my BPS. I am a rifle hunter(thats why I know nothing about slug hunting) but thinking I might try around school with slugs. Also another question....I have the "all season" tag and was wondering if I say I am hunting in a zone up by Grand Rapids when I got the license...can I hunt slugs down here in a different zone?

don't ever shoot anything through your barrel without a choke tube screwed in! Boilerguy is right, generally the more open the choke the better, but pattern your gun and see. Just don't shoot slugs through full chokes, that's not good.

Yes your all-season license is good anywhere, shotgun or rifle (well, except season 3B I guess).

Thats not 100% correct

The older guns with no choke tubs generaly shoot better slugs with a full choke specialy the Browning A5's.We have 4 that will out shoot any new gun on the market today using $1.99 slugs.100 yards with 30 or 32" full choked barrels riffle sights/scopes will hit a 2" dot 5 outa 5 rounds even after hundreds of rounds gone through the gun

Each gun has a mind of it's own.The same 2 guns will probly shoot different. You need to find out what brand and size your gun likes best.Just remember a few dollars wasted on shells adds up to a whole year you been waiting for so dont be tight and just try 1 load/brand.It's a long wait for the next season

By the way it's a lil late to be asking these ?'s.Now your going to sight that gun in when it's cold out and the season is just around the corner...HMMmmmmmmm Let alone most sporting goods stores are on the thin side of slugs at this time

When I was young, almost every shotgun in farm country was full choke and you used the same one for ducks, pheasants, and deer. The slugs made then were a bit undersized from what they are today, diameter-wise. Of course, guys would brag about their accuracy if they could hit a paper plate 3 out of 4 times at 30 yards. And most of the old timers thought practicing with slugs was a waste of good money. Most deer hunting was done in drives out there and most shots were within 20 yards. A lot of wounding went on. I once saw a young doe with 11 holes in various parts of her body. frown.gif

Browning83-

Dont feel bad if you havent "sighted in" yet. Its always good to get this done earlier but you still have a few days. If anything, only take a close shot or one that you are sure you can make a clean shot.

I have shot slugs all my deer hunting life (the last 13 years). I put in my imp cyl for slugs in my browning gold and it gets the job done. Good luck.
