Dose anyone have a cure for rusty ice jigs? I opened my jigs box awhile back an low an behold the rust gremlin got in. I dont like rusty jigs, an would like to clean them up without leaving behind a petroleum cleaning type smell Like flitz has which is great for suface rust on most metels. any ideas would be great. pray for early ice. That's easy boar, just get Viggy Stardust to buy you some new ones for Christmas!

Seriously, I have a few rusty ones too. Some lures like pimples, I just put new hooks on. The other stuff, I just replace.

I am going to try that rust inhibitor this winter and see if I have better luck.

I hate to say this.. but I dont think there is an easy fix. There will be a weak spot in the hook... Get new ones. You will be lucky if like on the pimples, you just need to replace the treble, not the whole lure.. but on many panfish lures, you will need to replace the whole lure.

Last fall I went through my ice gear and had some with rust.I tried to clean them and it didnt work so well and was afraid the jig or lure would have a weak point.I figured if I used a weak one and caught a nicer fish it might break.Trash can and ordered a few new ones.

If one tries to put them away after they have dried and not leave them wet, some of these problems might just go away.

I always spend the extra cash for the waterproof boxes (plastic tray style). Plano, MFS make good ones. I see Gander just came out with a waterproof ones as well. That helps, but you still get mositure in your boxes.

To help with that I always take my boxes in my house or heated garage after each use and leave the top open overnight so they can dry out.

As for a fix for rusty ones... there's no great solution. Maybe give them to a charity, or kids that would appreciate them.

exactly Ty. I air my jigs out when I come back from fishing in my basement next to my dehumidifier.

I wonder if sticking a few silica packets in the box would help dry things out. May not work with standing water, but maybe for damp jigs and such. I work at a large local retailer and find large packets of the stuff all the time mixed in with product packaging.

I think you can buy silica pellets at some craft stores and nurseries. I seem to remember a friend keeping some plants that she had in a vase with silica beads mixed in.

Hey thanks for the great response guys I really appreciate it. I usually do try to remember to leave the box open but this one time was all it took. I actually went into the bathroom an there was the answer, no it was'nt a playboy mag. it's called CLR, calcium lime rust remover. It really worked good, cleaned up the hooks an any metel surface, on the paint it took a Q tip an buffed it clean. Hey Gissert, I thought of getting viggie to buy some for X-mas but thats what I'd get him. Ha. Are ya up on LOW this year, be fun to get him an hook up with ya. We could stay at my cabin. I'll mention it to him. Anyway LAter boar
