Carlos Avery WMA

Recommended Posts

I have scouted early season. I was thinking of hunting this hard the next couple weeks and was wondering if anyone has killed a nice buck there. Was wondering if it is worth the effort or not? I found a spot that doesn't appear to be over hunted. Thanks

There are some huge bucks in Carlos Avery and yes it is worth hunting if you can get off the beaten path a bit. My experience is the farther from the road the better. Most guys are woods shy and don't want to take the time or the effort to get in more then a couple hundred yards. I know a guy that has shot 5 P&Y deer out of there and his son has taken 2! Good luck!

Thanks,

I have seen many does while scouting but no bucks yet. I hunted it Saturday but I arrived a little late and the spot I have scouted had another hunter that beat me to it on. How big the area is and how few hunters I have seen in the parts I have scouted I figured it could be good. Is there any parts that are better than others. I have been focusing more around Stacy and Wyoming.

Get a plat map and look for those dead end roads in the lesser traveled areas, look for topo maps and ariel photoes to help with some of the ground work. Many of the swampy areas are dried up and can be traversed but wear hip boots just the same but these areas can get you back into the deep woods because most people aren't willing to go through the effort. If you are seeing does set up on the best travel corridor and sit all day, if there is dense brush or cattail thickets nearby all the better. Those big boys will start to prowl in the next week and a half. The more time you can spend on stand the better. Hope this helps!

Ariel photoes are nice because you can look for road access and draw a line at a 1/2 mile all the way around the property, then look for the funnels ect., note where the pressure is going to come from and you have a winning spot!

I have also scouted Carlos early season. I have not hunted the area yet. I saw one decent 5x6 in september. I accidentally bumped him out of his bed. The area that I have scouted is considerably less pressured than the rest of the WMA, I believe, for the lack of accessibility, or rather the knowlegde of an accessible route. I really have not hunted the area, I hunt elsewhere. If you would be interested I wouldn't mind going out there. My e-mail adress is [email protected] . Send me a message.
