what do bass do for winter?

I have been thinking about this the last couple of times out. just like in the spring you want to know where and what they are going to do. So, what are the fish wanting to do? I know the usually fall stuff fattening up and fish green weeds, blah, blah, blah. I don't know if i have found many articles on winter bass and lots on spring time. Does anyone have any thoughts about what bass do during the winter or are staging to do. I know that on one lake in the area that the fish come down from the shallow weedy river into the main lake right now until they disappear for winter, but there is a period usaully right now when there is a nice population on one part of the lake. But that is only one lake.

We are still in the fall pattern.. Find the green stuff and work it!.. Inside turns will usually have the best green stuff.. For those who dont understand what an inside turn...

Inside Turn= Where the deepest water comes close to the shore, when the area next to it has shallow water out into the lake.

Then, they dont get total lock jaw during the winter.. I catch quite a few jigging for panfish all winter long.. you just dont really catch enough to target them. they stay shallow or shallow ish near the panfish usually... I see them on the Aqua-Vu all the time.. they just dont eat much.

so, they are still in the same areas just not as willing to bite. I thought i had read before that bass either suspend out deep or move out deep. this is what makes my head spin. like i said before the fish on one lake move back to the main lake right and are very catchable through the first part of nov., but there is a drop of in fishing. sometimes the fish are on some of the staging points and the weather gets cold and there isn't a decent lake bite.

thanks for the help

I catch bass up until ice-on around the same stuff they are in during the fall. You just have to work slower. I would imagine they move off a little bit in the winter, but I would not suspect they move too far. Keep in mind, many of the articles you read in Bass fishing magazines are written from the perspective of someone who fishes reservoirs in the south. Many fish there do move out the the main river, and deep tributaries. I grew up fishing the Tennessee river, and that is exactly what they do, since that is where the baitfish go.

Natural lakes are quite a bit different from what I have experienced here in Minnesota. Just follow the baitfish, if you can.

I catch bass on a lake all winter long in eight feet of water while i am fishing for gills, probably aboot every 4th or 5th fish is a bass. This is just a shallow bay that is off the main lake. and all of the bass come off the bottom to eat.

With the underwater camera, I've found bass to be a lot more active than I thought they would be under the ice. I've even had them cruise by in schools of three or more. And as was said before, there are some lakes that the bass seem to bite better on during the winter vs others.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
