Duluth area camping?

Hi,

I'm new to the state and am looking for a good place to camp on fairly short notice (so, the state parks in the area are out). We have a free weekend and I'd like to head north.

We like to fish and hike. Dogs would have to be allowed. No need for hookups (we're just tenting) but modern bathrooms / showers would be nice. Finally, we prefer cart-in like seclusion over high density campgrounds.

Has anyone tried Indian Point, Gunflint Pines, or Lamb's resort?

Check out Big Blaze. It's on the old highway between Duluth and Two Harbors. There's others also on that road but I'm not as familiar with them. If all else fails, Burlington Bay in Two Harbors is OK and run by the city. The showers aren't a highlight. If you're going as far as Grand Marais, the city runs a campground that's OK and has new bath/shower buildings.

Ifalls, Big Blaze is no longer a campground.

Penmeralter just about a mile up is open and as of today only had 3 campers in it when I drove By.

Jay Cooke has some great sites, might be one you want to check out as well.

Jay Cooke is great and they keep several sites "first come first served". They have some "walk-in" sites as well as HIKE-in sites. The hike ins are 1/2 mile to 3 miles hike in.

Can anyone from the north shore area tell me if there is any Rv sites with electricity around the Hovland Area and north to the Squaw lake area?

Grand Marais RV Park and Campground may be your best bet. It has full hookups and cable TV in one area.

I agree with Power, Jay Cooke is very nice. Good Hikes and still not to far from the north shore. Just one warning!!! Do not grill any chicken!!! I will rain for sure. Trust me on this one.
