Back from Alaska

Great trip to the Kenai Penninsula. Fished Homer for Halibut near the Berren Islands. All chickens, the largest 42#. Caught Sockeye from shore on the Kenai River. Seward was fantastic. Caught Silvers and Halibut. 204#, 116,94,83,75,65, plus some chickens. All in about 1 1/2 hours. A 2 1/2 to 3 hour boat ride to the spot. If we would have been selective I think we could have all over 100lbs. We brought back about 150 lbs of fish for 2 of us.

I also just got back from Alaska 2 days ago. My Dad and I floated the Aniak River. Awesome trip caught a bunch of arctic char, dolly varden, grayling, rainbows, and one of all 5 species of salmon(for those who don't know:sockeye, king, silver,chum, and pink.) It was a blast we caught fish throughout the whole trip. Caught some char and rainbows in the 22" range, around 5 pounds. Most were caught on spinning gear. Some on a fly rod(it was my first time fly fishing ever!!!, what a blast). It definatley won't be the last time I fly fish. Great scenery, started in the mountains, and we saw 10 bear total, 6 blacks and 4 brown. The most fun trip I have ever been on, I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good fishing adventure.

Sounds like you had a blast Arnie! Those are some big butts!! I've never broken the 100 lb mark, one of these years...Sounds like you must have been out by Montague island? Which outfit did you use in Seward? Halibut aren't my favorite to fish, but those are BIG fish...and darn good eating to boot. Did you see any salmon sharks? Gheenz, sounds like you had a blast as well! Welcome to the club.

i got back 2 weeks ago..... didnt go fishing its awsome up there, we were on a cruise holland america line... if any of you guys take a cruise i would seriously look into holland america before anyone else. the roomservice was smiling while scrubbing the toilet

Terry, We fished with Ben on the Pro fish-n-sea. It was an all aluminum boat that you could fish on all sides instead of just the back. We went on the combo trip for Silvers/Halibut. Only spent about 45 minutes for Salmon and got about 10 for 5 of us. No Salmon Sharks and it sounds like there are only a couple of boats that fish for them.

We went as far as Monague but as Ben told us he would have to kill us if we told anyone.

They had 2 175-4strokes and we had a problem with one on the way back in. We took turns pumping the fuel bulb for 2 1/2 hours, but it was worth it.

I spend a summer up there during one of my college years and will treasure every moment. I worked at a lodge on the Kenai Pennisula and got hooked up fat with a bunch of fishing junkies (Steve Paulding and Eric Lund- couple of guys from NH). They got me in the right direction and as soon as the season opened, we were on the river at least 3 times a day all summer long! Great times reeling in those reds, silvers, rainbows and char!

I did get to tour a little bit (Seward, Anchorage, Denali, and Fairbanks) as well and Alaska is definately a place to go and take at least 2 weeks off to do it. One week just won't do justice if you are traveling the entire state!

Actually the last one is a dog salmon otherwise known as Chum salmon. The couple of early ones look like silvers to me. Those are some very nice bows and what we called when I lived up there, one heck of a mallard (sockeye). Sounds like a great trip. I hope to get back up there next year.
