Does anybody use these or throw them at all. My grandpa use to swear by them. Have they been replaced by something better. i have whole box of them and i don't use them much. Just wondering why this once popular item for all fish doesn't get the attention in the bass world. Maybe it is going to make a comeback??? ike

Hiya -

Apparently I'm a throwback, but I love fishing spoons. Catch many many LMB every year on Northland Jawbreakers. Nemier spoons are also great, and maybe among the best is the Barney Spoon, which, as far as I know, is rarely available outside of Ohio. I have a friend in the industry that attends the Cleveland sport show every year, and he picks me up a few once in a while...

To me there are times when spoons are the best option there is. For me that's typically in heavy rushes where even a spinnerbait has a tough time getting through. You can still fish a spoon fairly quickly compared to flipping or pitching to clumps. You do miss fish on them, but you can catch almost all the ones you miss if you quickly pitch back to them with a jig and pig or wacky rigged senko-type bait like a Northland Dip-Stick or Comida.

The one bad thing about spoons is you have to remember to set the hook to the side. Every year I nail myself a couple times with a spoon. I think I have permanent Jawbreaker-shaped dents in my sternum from having them smack me at 100mph after I whiffed on a hookset... shocked.gif

Long story short - spoons definitely still work very well...

I like the Gold Mepps Scyclops for smallies up on LOW. We pitch them up along the rocks and bounce them back. Keep a tight line and just tick the rocks every few feet. Seems to work well for smallies and a wandering pike here and there...

Deitz, I posted once about the Timber Doodle but until your post I do not think I have ever heard anyone else ever mention the Timber Doodle. They are a great weedless presentation with the plastic trailer. I like the gold, silver, firetiger, or frog.

They also will get you a few bonus pike and yes you can pull these through any terrain. Yep just those 4 and then of course I have each in two different sizes and then 4 different plastic trailers. There is the white, green, firetiger speckle, and brown speckle. The gold with brown can work will in rivers as I believe it imitates the old crawfish with a little extra twist and flash.

The negative is I have had many hit the trailer of the plastic leading to a big time miss.

For those who have not tried the timberdoodle it is worth your effort.

There is another Mr. Twister product that also works well. It is a topwater and you can use the same plastics bodies as the timberdoddle. It is great for tossing entirely on top of the old Lilly pad and burning across without ever worry of a hook up. There are larger ones marketed for Muskies but these are specifically for bass and again I never ever see mention or talk of these and for the life of me can not remember the name. Great top water for buzzing weeds. That is my flip side the old scum frog. Sometime I will buzz it over the weeds to get a frenzy going and toss the scum frog for the more lazy slow biters.

Oh and Deitz I only have the firetiger and white in this one but of course I still have the for plastic body options smile.gif

Have any of you heard of the Talkin Spoon made by Rebel??? It is a hollow plastic spoon that has rattles inserted inside....I only have a couple left, and this is one of the best slop baits that I have found, at least for spoons!!

If anyone wants to get rid of one or knows where to find some of these lures let me know!!!! grin.gif

I think I have at least every size and color of the old standby- the Johnson's Silver Minnow. Put a pork rind trailer/plastic on the hook, and you have a killer set up for fishing slop and heavy weed mats. I have at least one of each, of the other spoon's mentioned in the other posts. A guy really shouldn't go bass fishing without a couple of spoons in the tacklebox. These lures do have their time and place, that is for sure. The Silver Minnow is very effective on the pike, as well.

Does anyone know of a store that sells rapala spoons?

I wish... As far as I know they're no longer being made. They were a great spoon. Not the most weedless in heavy cover but for skittering over grass clumps then swimming between them they were great.

I first used Rapala spoons while I was guiding pike in Alaska. They were one of our top producers there, and acocunted for many, many fish over 40 inches. I've long ago burned through my supply. Wish I could find some more...
