Frank Schneider (leech lake) tournament

Recommended Posts

Curious to hear this story too, never heard about it. I have fished this tourney for several years, though have missed the last couple due to other conflicts.

It seemed to be professionally run and considering the number of entrants and bodies of water they are on along with the fact you are going on the "honor" system with witnesses etc, it seemed top notch.

There was some controversy over a fish that was caught by Bobby L. a few years back. Anyone who has ever met bobby knows what really happened. He has helped with the tournament for years and a technichallity (sp) took his fish away. Bobby was in the boat when I caught my first fish and I can tell you he is a 100% stand up guy, it was a bad deal all around.

Long story short Bobby caught a awesome fish during the tourney but since he was not wearing the tourney hat because it fell off while handling the fish he was DQ'ed for it. The hat was in the picture just not on his head. Bobby is a top notch guy and I still feel he was wronged in that deal. I have not fished that tourney since.

He did, and the worst part is all the help that he had given f the tourny through the years, giving away guided trips as raffle gifts ect. They just stuck to the letter of the law, it just goes to show that common sense doesn't always prevail.

Well, that's too bad for him, but rules are rules. I don't know this person from Adam, and it is unfortunate it happened. He should have just put the hat back on before the picture. Pretty easy to do. Rules are there for everyone to follow no matter what you "gave" to the event, , but if they accepted the fish, there certainly would have been an uproar the other way because he was involved with the tourney. It could have been seen as a bribe.

It is a hoaky rule IMO, but how else can you ensure the fish was caught during the tourney if they are not required to have a tourney boat come over and certify it? If it happened to me, I would be [PoorWordUsage]ed too, but at myself for not putting the (Contact Us Please) hat back on. Seems pretty simple to me. Sorry guys, I don't agree with you on this one. They did the right thing. Unfortunately your friend was the person who it happened to.

I don't think that it was the actual ruling that put people off as much as how the ruling was handled. There are some details that are the meat of the story, and I think Jon and I both were hesitant to post what happened because we didn't want to get into a debate about whether it was right wrong or indifferent, it sounds like we both know what happened and that ok with me. I personally understand why the decision was made, I just don't agree. To me there is always room for consideration. I certianly don't have any sour grapes. We have fished the tournament for years and will continue for hopefully many more.

I was on the tournament commitee that year, and I can tell you that everybody involved felt a little upset by the whole thing. On the other hand RULES ARE RULES!!! follow them, and live by them. Yes the hat was in the picture, but not on his head as the rules CLEARLY STATED IN BLACK & WHITE. Maybe you would like to put together a tournament of that size yourself only to have the rules disregarded, and see how you handle it. Before you start ripping on me about this post, just know that I would be upset if it happened to me too, but I'm not going to go whine to the directors about a mistake that I made and expect them to just hand over a big prize. I would be willing to bet that he and everybody that knows about this story will forever follow the tournament rules to the letter from now on.
