Kessle

Hockey Guy

Recommended Posts

I heard from a very reliable source that the Bruins do not want Kessle in the NHL this year. But that doesn't mean he will play for the Gophers. He doesn't like school so he may play OHL where they have more of an NHL type schedule. He hasn't made up his mind yet so he may be back in a Gophers jersey next year. I think his dad will have a big say in his decision.

This is what I dont understand They leave early thinking they will make the big team (Hendrickson,Rasmussen,Crowley,Kessel? come to mind. They leave and dont make it, play in the minors for a few years than retire. They forgo their shot at a great education, something that will help them after hockey is done.

Well Napa, not an excuse, but all I can say is that I don't remember liking school too much (actually, it was taking tests that I didn't like) when I was there and I suppose kids these days feel the same. You know the saying, "the trouble with youth......"

Napa,

I have heard this argument before but I have to say that as much as I would like to see these kids stay in college so we can have a good team, I don't blame them for a second if they leave. If they stay in school there is a chance that they will get injured and never play pro at all.

School is something they can always finish later. Even if they stay in school, graduate, and land a nice job in the real world, what kind of money will they be making? Maybe $40,000 - $60,000 per year? If someone offered me a contract that would pay me 10-15 times that amount per year I wouldn't even think twice about it. Even if I were offered only $100,000 a year in the minors I would consider it.

Staying in school now makes that education much easier. No classes and tutors with benefits. Don't forget about the cheerleaders with benefits and fans with benefits. That's what I saw in my stint at NoDak and find it hard to believe it's any different as a Gopher. I myself would probably take the $ but them benefits add up when a guy is 19-20 years old. wink.gif

I had my twenty year reunion on Saturday night (Hopkins) and my old next door neighbor (Jeff Dubay) was telling me that Kessel really doesn't like school, wants out badly and was supposed to have a decision made all ready... it sounds like about 80% of the team thinks he's a bit of a snob as well. Boston doesn't want to pay him the big bucks and doesn't think he's ready yet, but don't be surprised if they change there tune and semi lowball him as they know he wants out badly.

I think the Bruins realize Kessel is not ready physically for the NHL so another year in college would be good for him.

Let's not forget he's only 18 years old I think some the criticism of Kessel is ridiculous......

Napa you won't have worry about Kessel flunking out of the hockey anytime soon he's going to be awesome NHLer for a long time, IMO he'll be an All Star his game is taylor made for an NHL power Play....

Not an impact. Are you kidding me. One of the top rated young players in the world. Every team in the country wanted this kid. I agree he is not ready to play with grown men. He needs to get in the weight room and put on some weight, but to say he's not an impact to Gopher Hockey is an understatement. We should be happy as Gopher fans we have been a minor leage team for the pro's for many many years. Kids want to come play for the State of Hockey. Why do you think Kessel came to MN and not stay in his home state of WI. I'm sure it wasn't for the women!!

Oh its just that I have been a fighting sioux/Gopher fan since I was little. whenever they play against eachother in a series, I just want one a piece from both teams but in the playoffs, let the best win.

I dont see anything about Kessel leaving? confused.gif

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
