Do I need a Brake Controller

icechipper

Question

I currently have a 97 F150 with tow package (7pin trailer connector factor installed), we recently purchased a 16' flatbed trailer for misc hauling. It came with electric brakes on both axle's. Questions is do I need a brake controller for the brakes to function correctly? Thanks for any replies.

Yes unless you are going to run with out the electric brakes. Which can be don't if it is not too big of a load. But the controllers are cheap and with the trailer package everything is pre wired you just need a controller and wireharness. I use a Prodigy controller which is supposed to be one of the best and with the wiring harness that just plugs into my truck under the steering wheel and then the back of the controller it ran me about $150. Not bad considering how much safer it make you. With a 1/2 you don't have that big of truck and a 16' trailer with a load will push you around without brakes.

I'm getting one installed for pulling our new camper trailer. The camper dealer says I don't need one because the trailer brakes will work regardless but the controller synchronizes the vehicle and trailer brakes for smoother stopping in case of emergency. If you have the tow package wires already run to the back bumper, installation labor will be less.
