Jet Diver Questions

Recommended Posts

Just got one of the 20' model jet divers and have a few questions as I've never used em(or Dipsy's or other): What range of depth can I expect with a standard 80lb braid by varying boat speed and amount of line out? Also, how long of a leader should I use(will be fishing stained river/resorvoir water), I'm leaning towards using some 80lb hard mono I've got and think I'll start this experiment out using bucktails and floating cranks such as baby shallow raiders and #18 Rapalas. And finally, can I use these with planer boards or is that a bit much? Thanks, later.

never used them for muskies but i tried them for walleyes a few times. i found the action from the bait cause them to turn and sometimes foul - the small floating raps were fine but anything with a bigger lip or more action it was really hit or miss. we gave up early and went back to the leadcore but i do admitt we kinda gave up early - maybe check in the walleye fourm and see what those guys think of them

I really do not know if the jets could handle pulling big plugs, but you could give em a shot... But the ones you mentioned should work...

For a trolling set-up, I would use 30lb Trilene Big Game or 80 to 100lb test Power Pro or another form of superline for your spool to the jet diver... Will save a lot of room on your reel compared to that bigger mono... 30lb mono is common for trolling on some musky set-ups, but use a longer rod that is very forgiving and set the drag properly...

From your diver I would then use that big mono, or even go bigger (I personally use 100lb fluro on my trolling leaders). Run about a 3 to 4 foot leader to your bait...

Try it out and see how it will work... I know bigger dipsys will handle big baits, but unsure on the jets...

And for the boards, Church Tackle Walleye boards will handle big baits flat lined off of them... But again, am unsure if the extra pull on a diver will sink em or not... Guess someone has to try huh? smile.gif

Soon as the weather is bearable I'm gonna give er a whirl. Think I'll use my 8'glass rod with 80lb braid down to the jet and then tie 100lb flouro for the leader as JKH mentioned. Probably start with a #18Rap and see how that works and then maybe try some bigger/harder pulling plugs. Sounds like the Dipsy may be the preferred route, have to try em both! Pete was right, muskies do suck!
