Anyone been up North???? How'd you Do?

Just got back from the Vermilion Bay Area...here's what I noticed...

1...Mayflys thicker then I have ever seen when we first arrived, had to have really effected the walleye fishing, they just had too much easy food to prey on...only seemed to be a factor on the bigger lakes like Eagle, Wabigoon, Cedar..

2....Multiple encounters with incidental walleyes at much shallower depths then expected. This was surprising because of the warm spring, warm water temps, and hot sunny days with no clouds. I got new sunglasses that really enhanced my water vision, I could literally see schools of walleyes cruising the weedlines, as shallow as less then 10' in the middle of the day...So when you are up there, don't always look for rocks, think weedlines too!

3..Big agressive pike holding in typical "musky" areas attacking smaller lures and top water

4...I am not one to complain about bugs, it's just something you deal with when going up north. However, the mosquitos were just outrageous, sitting outside at night to relax with a cold beer on the deck was not even an option. When you went to bed it sounded like a generator was being run outside because all you could hear is the buzzing, bring lots of SPRAY and be sure to close the screen door cool.gif

Going to Morson for a week starting July 15th. Haven't been up since late May. I will have to check the weedlines. Last August I decided to pitch a shoreline one evening to try for Smallies,I don't know too much about Smallie fishing other than working rocky shorelines. This shoreline was rocky with weeds close to the shore. We picked up some of the nicest "Eyes", right at the weedline, that we saw all weekend doing this. I still have not caught too many Smallies, except the occassional accidental ones, but I did learn something new about fishing Walleyes in August.

Walleyes when it is hot out will resort to the weedline for shade and to take advantage of the bait fish hoding in the same weeds......This past weekend up in Canada this is all we fished cause they were the only areas holding active fish..

Just returned from Saskatewan by Fort Quapple. Had great luck on the eyes, but had to dig in the weeds to find them. Didn't get a fish unless it was 6 feet of water or less. Wish I had my plainer boards along to get the lures up even shallower. Was a little hot when we were there. CAJ
