Eagle Fish Mark 480

Question

I am hearing a clicking noise when my depth finder is turned on. The sound is coming from the transom-mounted transducer. It is loud enough that I can clearly hear it in the bow of my 14' Lund. I asked an employee at Gander Mt. about this and he said "You know those things do make some noise." Not the answer I was looking for. I think my transducer is shot. What do you think?

Does make it sound while it's in the water or when on trailer.

If out of the water, ticking sound is normal, all transducers do that.

I have a X15MT with dual freq and it "ticks" different from one to another frequency.

Stick it in a coffee can, as Jon did the other day at the muskie seminar. They are loud! That is just what they do. I don't have an in depth explanation, but it has to do with how they flash to sense depth and stuff. Maybe someone else knows the exact answer? Its normal, don't worry about it.

Does it read depth and fish. If it does there is nothing wrong. If it ain't ticking it ain't working. Transducer will make noise the noise you hear is the pulse it sents to the bottom to get your return. So there should be some noise. But as Valv said you shouldn't hear when in the water.

Hmm.. I have the same unit... and also a 14' aluminum boat with no deck or carpet in the rear.. I don't hear it... Totally silent.. but he unit works perfectly. Although if it's dead calm and no ambient sounds.. I can hear it once in a while.. but not all the time.

I have both a 480 and a 320. No clicking sounds from either one. Both are silent. I guess if it is working fine you are o.k. I know stuff like this drives me nuts wondering what the heck it is.

Apparently, it doesn't bother the fish. Last night, I caught nine bass, biggest was 20" - smallest 16 1/2", in an hour and 10 minutes. It drives me crazy though because I fish with other guys using the same depth finder and their units are silent.

The sonar unit itself does not make noise, it's the transducer that does (the black unit attached to back of boat with cable)

My friend had a Lowrance model (I can't remember which one) and the unit ticked. It had to be pretty quiet to be able to hear it, but it was coming from the unit at the same frequency that you hear ticking at the transducer.
