Post mid-June Morson fishing reports here

Recommended Posts

I was up last weekend fishing the Myles Bay area. Found plenty of small walleyes during the day in 13-18' and in the evening on the sand in 8' or less with the occasional decent fish mixed in but you really had to sort through the small ones. As of Sunday though the fish moved out of the spots we found them in and may be headed to their summer spots. There was also a huge Mayfly hatch on Sunday so not sure what that did to the fishing.

Just got back today, spent a week in Miles bay, I didn't see the mayfly hatch there yet, it was real bad around Rabbit piont and in towards Morson. I hate to open a can of worms again, but small, small, fish. I have to say its the netting. Saw nets all last year, but they know that there are no longer big fish left up in miles bay area, so the must have moved to other parts of the lake. Just my 2 cents worth.

Heading up now, will post report when we ge back Monday.

The last few years have been the best ever for big fish for us near Morson, 7's 8's and 9's.... so I'm not sure what you are seeing up in Miles Bay. We did see a slight decline in the over 4 pounders last year, and no big ones yet this year, but we'll watch this summer and keep track of the biggies. Maybe you are on to something we haven't noticed. Remember that each year has a different growth rate and year class, and water levels have been like a roller coaster. If something is off in nature, it's almost never an easy or single answer.

We see all the Big Grassy netters go by our place every morning and night and there has been no increase in the number of guys netting, so they must be coming from somewhere else, if there is more netting. If you check the cleaning shacks at dozens of resorts, and hundreds of cabins, you'll see a lot of big fish in the buckets.

Good fishing all!!

One great day, one good day and one non-day...

The walleyes are on the reefs!!!

Really nailed them Friday up on high the reefs, 10-14 feet, on some leeches left over from a previous trip. Switched to crawlers and did just as well, all on hammered gold spinners. Never left the one reef!

Saturday was a bit slower, but still lots of fish. Nothing bigger than 18 inches (hmmm, still no big fish this year) but lots of good eating size fish.

Sunday, never got out. Woke up to 30 mph west winds and called it quits. Did chores and came home a day early to bank a day off. No use trying to fight mother nature and her cold fronts.

From some radio chatter, folks fishing the shoreline didn't do so well as they did earlier in June. It looks like the fish made the annual migraton from the sand to the rubble through the mayflys and then to the reefs right on time.

Home for 11 days then back up for 6! Stocking up on crawlers already!!

See ya on the water!!

PS. The water has dropped amazingly fast and is now well below normal, 35 percentile compared to 85 percentile in early May. The sand beaches are a lot bigger, and lots of rocks sticking out!! Docking tough for those who have been dealing with high water of late.

Wild Thing,

Doesn't sound like you did any muskie fishing, huh? Did you see anyone chasing toothy critters? Hear any reports?

Just curious- what direction do you usually head from Morson? I'll be heading up there soon and I'll head NW from Morson about 20 miles or so. I usually make a couple camping trips up in that neck of the woods each year.

Scoot,

I haven't had the time to chase Esox as yet, nor the patience! We fish west of Morson mostly, but all over. Saw a couple of musky boats head west Saturday but not sure where they went. I'll check next time up and get a report for you. Lots of folks out chasing them around us, especialy when we're hunting in October.

Good fishing!
