Just saw a story on ESPN (Contact US Regarding This Word) that says some guy is starting up a big game hunting league that he's comparing to other major sports and says he'll sell logos on camo like a NASCAR uniform. These "pro" hunters will be shooting deer with tranquilizer guns and accumalating points during a season by the size of deer they shoot.

Just more people not understanding the true reason why real hunters hunt and real fisherman fish.

I'm not saying all sportsman do this, but lots of people hunt and fish for the soul purpose of putting meat in the freezer.

That doesn't even sound like it would be legal??? I can't see any states fish and game department going for this, I guess unless it's on a designated hunting ranch, then yippee, big deal. Terrible concept, good way to ruin the sport.

This topic is spurring debate across the hunting commmunity, especially within certain bowhunting groups. As I follow the fray, I'll relate what I can to the conversation. At this point, there seems to be more furor than real debate. We'll see what happens!

In MY opinion as a hunter, I find this disgusting - especially if so-called professional hunters participate. The WHA claims many of the spots are already filled.

Hunting inside high fence ranches shooting big bucks with tranquilizer darts? Why don't fishing tournaments just start launching boats into a swimming pool full of fresh water and huge bass?

Essentially, success in WHA tournaments will hinge on who can get the tranquilizer dart into the deer. If this is all it took to be a successful hunter in real life, everyone would fill their tag on the first day if they practiced shooting their bow all summer or all year long. "Get ready to shoot Bill, they're sending the deer our way." But real hunting is about scouting and analyzing and placing your stands and blinds with care. And then hoping your observations and hunches paid off - not about the few seconds it takes you to pull back on the string and release your arrow.

Its sort of like hitting a baseball. Anybody can hit a ball in the strike zone if they practice enough. But hitting the ball in a game situation involves much more - knowing which pitches you will be able to hit and anticipating what the next pitch will be.

The so-called hunter that runs the WHA actually said that they will have profiles on the deer the hunters shoot as well as the hunters. He said many people will root for the deer. So that is supposed to help our sport. I don't think this has PETA written all over it like many people do. I think the WHA is run by a bunch or morons who never considered what actual hunters will think of this impending disaster.

Everybody is trying to make a buck, or shall I say dollar. Its like the elk and deer farmers, they can't make a go of it just selling meat so then they try to sell 'shooter' deer. If people - note I didn't say hunters - wouldn't pay to shoot these fenced deer and elk, then it would die out, but theres always someone looking for the easy way, in this case shooting animals inside fences. Disgusting.
