camping recipes

Go to a camping store like Gander Mt and get one of those pie irons. They are made of cast iron and can be used to make pies and sandwiches over a campfire. Easy and practical. Recipes are on the package.

Here's an easy one for you.

Core an apple from the top stoping before you reach the bottom. Place a smaller sinkers bar in the middle and wrap in tinfoil and cook over the fire or on the grill till the apple is soft and the candybar is melted.

I'll have to try that. Knowing my kids though, they'll be wearing half the gooey center so swimming will follow the apple snack.

Kids like cooking with Pie Irons. Two pieces of bread and for filling the skys the limit.

Two pieces of bread with pizza fixing in the middle works great, can fill with fruit as well to make dessert.

Crimp the edges together and toast. mmmmmm.

Actually alot of brownie mixes work ok on the fire. Did it in the BWCA last year. Put the mix in a pot and cook over the fire. Stays pretty gooey but just sit in a circle and pass the pot around take a bite and pass it on. I think you can find the kind that don't need eggs, its a just add water thing.

We've done whole meals with the pie irons...

sandwiches include:

Ruebens w/ kraut and swiss on rye

Pizza all different kinds

Hot Ham and cheese

Hot Italian sausage with pizza sauce and cheese

deserts:

Apple pie

cherry pie

chocolate pudding pie

a little cinnamon/sugar and the above deserts are all good! Plus a little vanilla ice cream if available MMM MMM!

If you're doing S'mores, try shut'ter uppers... same as a s'more but add a Kraft Carmel to the mix... my kids semi-roast them so they're really gooey...

They also like roasted Starburst candy.... kids smirk.gif

Then there is always the old stand by for dinner, foil packs... let them decide want they want in theirs... pork chops and veggies, hamburger and potatoe slices, barat and kraut/onions etc.

and don't forget zip-lok baggie omlettes for breakfast. The nice thing about those is you can make them at home so it speeds breakfast up. Plus they decide what they want in theirs and you can write everybody's name on their own baggie. Clean-up is a snap!

A good cheat for Smoores is to use fudge stripe cookies instead of grahmcrackers and choclate.

Another good one is a cherri dump cake.

dump one package of choclate cake mix in a castiron pot.

dump one can of cherries on top.

dump another cake mix on that.

dump another can of cherries on top.

place on a bed of dying coles from your morning fire and put coles on top of lid. Go fishgin, hiking or whatever and you will come back to a great dessert.

As an old Boy Scout Master, here is a trick that is sure to please the kids and please the adults as well. This is a great breakfast idea. First boil a large pot of water while you prepare your breakfast. These are omlettes in a bag. Chop up anything you would normally put into an omlette, green peppers, onions, cheese etc and then crack two eggs into a baggie, the kind that you press to seal. Mix the eggs a bit with a fork in the bag and add just a tad of water or milk, some salt, pepper, tabasco (if you're daring) and any of the chopped ingredients. Seal the bags and drop them into the boiling water. The omelette cooks in the bag and can be eaten out of the bag as well. NO DIRTY DISHES TO CLEAN! When you take the bags out of the water you can use the boiled water for hot chocolate or instant coffee and the rest of the boiled water can be used to clean up any dishes that you do use, forks, cups etc. The kids used to love this breakfast because they would not have to scrub cooked eggs from a frying pan and they had fun making them as well. Enjoy!

Make some Stove Top stuffing before you leave and have your butcher cut you some thick pork chops. Slice the porkchops on the side but not all the way through. Stuff with the stuffing and put a few bits of diced onion in. Fold back over and double wrap in aluminum foil then freeze. When you get to camp let them thaw during the day while you fish and when you come in at sundown build a good fire and build up a good coal base. Bury the stuffed porkchops in coals to the side of the fire and replenish with red coals as needed. 40 minutes or so and you can take the chops out of the coals. A good pair of winter gloves and you can eat the chops right out of the foil like a burger. Tasty and pretty easy.

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
