Recommended Posts

this recipe you won't know that it is northern.

2 1/2 lbs pike

2 tbsp cornstarch

1/2 cup water

1/2 cup sugar

1/2 tsp accent

sprinkling of garlic salt

sprinkling of black pepper

1/2 cup gratted carrot (optional)

1/4 cup minced onion

2 tbsp salt

clean fish and fine grind twice in food grinder can do with y bones in you wont find them after you grind your fish. now add sugar. mix cornstarch with water and then add seasonings. add to fish. mix and knead very well. add carrots (opt) and salt and knead into fish mixture. roll into balls one thing that i do extra is roll them in crushed corn flakes not only dose it taste good but it makes it a little easier to handle. and now deep fry about 5 minutes or till golden brown. you can also make patties out of these and fry till golden brown.

im not much of a pike eater but the first time i made them this way i thought it was crab meat. the corn starch makes them ferm like crab meat the more corn starch the fermer.it is oh so good.

First part of the season the fish are okay, later in the summer they get "fishy" tasting. Also in winter they are better. Spearing in the winter the fish taste great.

Boiled nortern, then dipped in melted butter or "poor mans lobster" is awesome and is easy to pull out the Y-bones after cooked!

The bigger the fish, the easier to find the bones, 4lbs and up.

Tha best way to fix norhtern is to boil it. The trick is to use salted water. About 3/4 cup to 2 quarts of water and add a chopped onion. This is better with fish 5 lbs. and up.Cut the fillets into 4" chunks and drop them in the boiling water. When the meat floats to the top it's done.I eat with garlic melted butter. We usually catch a decent northern while muskie fishing.

Please don't take this the wrong way but, personally, anyone that claims to not like northern maybe doesn't quite know how to prepare them.

I have prepared a mix of fish for a meal using walleye and northern, and I have yet had anyone be able to reliably tell the difference. Accept for a small difference in texture, northern pike is every bit as tasty as walleye. Just my opinion.

Right on BobT! I prefer Northerns, but I get the Y's out. Wouldn't eat them if I had to pick through the bones....My personal favorite eating fish (freshwater), pearch is almost a tie in the winter...

i like them baked also, other than deep fried or pan fried. we have baked northern for christmas, this year i have 2 13 pounders on moms bday the 5th of aug that were bakeing, stuffed with home made dressing and basted with butter and lemon juice. but with the recipe at the begining of this forum you would think you were eating lobster.

try the northerns in a pot of sprite or 7up. boil them until done and dip them in butter. oh so good!! they are even good without the butter.

That's exactly how I cook eelpout. If you want the fish REALLY sweet, you can boil it in Mountain Dew. Sometimes I add a little garlic to the melted butter too. I've never tried northern this way, only eelpout, but I'll have to try it soon! My wife bugs me all summer long to go catch some 'pout to boil up and dip in butter - thanks for the idea about using pike instead! Pout are impossible to catch in the summer!
