Which locators do you Pros use?

Whopper Stopper

Question

I have been reading the archives and also trying to find any info on the locators that the serious fisher people are using. The one problem I have seems to be that the manufacturers change these things so often it is hard to keep up on them. I want to get a unit that has both a locator and GPS. I would like to keep the price around the $1000 mark. Also I am open as to brand although it seems Lowrance is popular and I like my H2o. What happened to Garmin? has their following dwindled? Also when I do make my decision I want a unit that I can take out of the boat and with little trouble mount in my truck. Thanks for any help or comments........

Depends on who you are calling a pro... All the companies are putting out some pretty good units now.. I have 3 Lowrance units in my boat right now. And I really like them. I was with Wiskers guide service and he had the new Hummingbird, it was a sweet unit, but well over your price range.

If I were you I would look at the Lowrance line, I think they seem to have the best bang for the buck! However, the vexlar Edge isa great unit for the price too.

if you want something you can use in your truck, i would suggest you go with seperate units (i prefer seperate units anyways, much nicer having a full screen for both sonar and gps than dealing with a split screen).

i can highly recommend the lowrance global map 3600 for a gps unit. they'll run you around $500, which would leave around $500 for a graph.

i prefer a color gps unit, and still prefer the black and white graphs, but that may just be that the only experiences i had with color graphs were when they first hit the market and had trouble reading them in bright sunlight. but from what i hear that isnt such an issue anymore.

You can really get a lot of unit for $1000 these days. I recommend sticking with Lowrance. They offer a great unit that is fairly easy to use. For about $600 you could look at the Lowrance 332c or 334c. I've heard great things about both.

Thanks for the comments and advice. I was talking to one of the guys at Joe's today and he said the 334 would be his choice. I talked to a guy at Cabelas and he said he would get the 332. He said an external antenna is by far better and that the 334 still has to many problems. Any thoughts on this? Price wise I would have some left over. Anyway, thanks again!

OK, I did a little pro fishing(walleye)...a while back

My non-sponsored(key word) units were

X-15 console

3520 Pinpoint console and bowmount(switchable/movable)

This was on a Yarcraft 1895 Storm DC w/225 merc opti w/15hp kicker. Pinpoint bowmount (5 transducer) 24v 60-80# thrust.

I used the X-15 for GPS when running and gunning and the Pinpoint w/transom mount transducer(splitter cable) for depth(located on my console). The did a split screen w/X-15 and moved my 3520 to the bow if fishing there. The key here is the transducers were different frequency.

Good luck!

I run a Lowrance x-18c now and split my screen between mapping and sonar.

If I had to do it over I'd get two seperate units.

Maybe even two combo units like the 332.

Run each full screen, one sonar one mapping.

That way if you have a problem with one, you have a back up.
