Headlamps for night time Muskies?

Recommended Posts

Alright night time muskie fishing guys, what are you guys using for a headlamp?

If my hair continues too thin I could use the full moon, but I am currently in a holding pattern and Bucher says moon up is not as productive as a moon rising or setting anyways, so I am opting for the headlamp.

While viewing the second Badfish video, I saw a variety of headgear. One in particular was the Cat's Eyes Cap Light. I liked the size of the unit, small and compact, but I was wondering about light output.

Any experience with the Cat's Eyes or any other headlamp for muskie fishing?

I use ther Cateyes for tying and general banging around the boat. They last forever and are tough as nails, but the light does not emmit very far. For watching the water or something with more range I have the streamlight job that has three settings. 1 LED light(about the same as Cateyes),three LEDs light (you can see the lure in the water, and things about ten feet from the boat) or one halogen bulb (this one is very bright and long range). I really like that all I have to do is turn a dail to change from one option to the other.

Do you guys ever use the rope lighting and battery from the portable ice house in the boat? I read a post about that and thought it may work well. Seems like the rope would tuck around the bow nicely. Feedback?

I use a Princeton Tec. Its a multi LED lamp that runs off 4 AA batts. It has a spot light mode and a flood light mode. The spot light setting allows me to see my lure from at least 15 or more feet away... Seems to work great for me...think I paid about 45-50 bucks for it.

I bought a new "Energizer" LED headlamp at Menards for like $15.00. Two AAA batteries.. and really built well.

It has both white and red LED's.. and is REALLY bright.. these LED lights have come a long way in just the last year or two! I love the red mode for night.. fishing and astronomy type stuff.. really nice... and cheap!

do you guys really watch your bait with the light? i have found it scares fish. really bad on clear water lakes. i use a glow bead so i know when to make my figure 8 turns and where i am at and leave the headlight for hookups and spot moving (or digging into the cooler). does the color filter things help with that? think i like it dark better anyway.....

I keep my headlamp off most of the time and turn it on when a fish is hooked, moving or working on gear.

Me too. I wouldn't even mind being without running lights if it was possible. But, when you do catch that fish a headlamp is sure nice to have. I've unhooked a few muskies under the light of the moon and it's not fun at all. frown.gif

No, I don’t fish with it on all the time. I might turn it on if I think my lure is fouled or not performing correctly and I want to see what the problem is.....or I turn it on during that rarest occasion when I actually catch a ski........
