Any Morson report?

Recommended Posts

I'm heading up tomorrow. The report I've got from my uncle who lives up there is they're still in the sand/rubble/weed bays. Water temp is still pretty cool, but it should be warming up this weekend . . .

I'm also headed up this weekend. My plan is to start on the rubble and work my way to weed lines. May be a dump shoot but finding the eyes this time of year always is. Just hoping for good weather, catching fish is just a bonus. I'll post a report next week.

Water temp was in the low 60's. We got em from 8' to 30', mostly on rocky bottoms. The wind was East and NE for the first two days the N and NW to light and variable the next couple of days so none of the sandy/weedy spots that I usually fish were exposed to wind. Even with less than ideal winds, we still did decent for numbers of fish and average size. The bigger fish came out of 8' to 10' and the greater numbers came out of deeper water. Hope this helps.

Same here. Rocky/rip rap shores. My best luck came in about 12-16' trolling spinners and minnows - no wind blowing in = no fish. I did catch two 24 inchers and one 17 inch, but we sorted through a lot of 8-13 inchers.

We did basically the same as Eastwind. Started out with bottom bouncers and spinner rigs along the sandy shores and switched to jigs later on in the week. Caught a lot of fish in the 20-25 inch range, even more very small ones. Deeper water was best 12-25'. Our evening shoreline casting only lasted a couple of days. All in all a great opener.

What worked better for the larger fish for you guys over the weekend - jigging or trolling spinners and where they deeper or shallower? I marked lots of fish of the drop offs in 18 - 20 feet but they wouldn't take the bait.

I also graphed a ton of fish on the drop offs and transitions. Couldn't get them to bite at all on Monday. I also was graphing huge waves of bait fish. I tried jigging up the fish on the breaks but no takers. I don't know what the difference from Sunday to Monday was but it seemed as if the fish turned off on Monday. Back up this weekend to try again.

So I take it the wind must have been blowing at that time eh? I plan on heading out this upcoming weekend and we dump in at the Gov't docks, we had success just south of there last week and I plan on getting back on them. If your heading up I can certainly tell you were they were popping. Of course it may have changed already. Did I mention your shorelunch avatar looks nummy.

We're heading back up Friday morning - should be up there by 10am and are staying about five "cottages" north of the Gov't dock on the high rock point. When the wind blew into the spot fishing was decent but when it died the fishing "tailed off." Then there were all those fish on the breaklines that wouldn't take the bait. I'm gonna try some leeches this weekend too.

Our penciled in gameplan is to head up to Miles one day and/or Obakikon and fish around the BV/Manitou/Rabbit area the other. I'm always open to trying new spots - and meeting some FMers up there.

Hi guys,

I am making my first trip to Morson this Friday fishing June 2-5. I am staying at New Moon Landing. I have never fished this area. Any general direction you could give me to start would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

EJ

EJ,

I'm sure the folks at New Moon will put you on fish. From Hanson Bay you are within minutes of some great fishing. Concentrate on rubble and rip rap shore lines with wind exposure. They were there last weekend and I doubt they will have moved by tomorrow. Have a good trip and enjoy the area.

Wow! Six great days on LOW. Too much heat and too much wind, but we got tons of fish. Nothing big, but lots of 15-17 inches.

We found them VERY shallow on the SAND, up into 5-6 feet of water. All on minnows, I used spinners, one guy used a jig one day and did as well. One afternoon we ran out of minnows (three dozen in an hour!) and I tried a Powerbait on a spinner and did just as well, so you know they were hungry!

We'd start out along the rubble near the sand and catch some fish there, but the numbers were on the sand. When we cut them open, they were FULL of pine fly nymphs that are starting to hatch out of the sand.

Wind and current a big factor, tried to find wind coming in, but not so much that we couldn't move with the electric.

Back up in two weeks, but they may be out of the sand and onto the reefs by then. It's nice when they are where they are supposed to be!!

Thanks for the pre-trip tips, guys...

went out on may 26th for a couple hours out Morson. Didnt get any big ones to speak of but some good eaters. 4 of us kept 8 walleye in the 15-17 inch range so made for a nice meal. Found them shallow back in a bay with a rock bottom in about 8ft. just a jig and minnow. we would have fished longer but the skeeters got the best of us at around 930 that evening. Gonna head up tuesday and the forecast looks good. Have to give an update on how fishing is. Not sure if we are going to fish walleyes or lakers. Brian

Three of us ventured out over this past weekend. It was one of the best walleye weekends I've had up there. We fished a rock/sand bay with the wind blowing in. We were just trolling spinners with either minnows or plastic in 4-8' and were catching sizes 14-24". Time of day didn't matter. It was a lot of fun!

I hope this bodes well for the summer reef fishing! This is certainly the best early fishing in the past three years for us. It's fun when they key on the sand! I was amazed how many of those pine fly things they can have in their stomachs...

11 days and I'll be back for four on the lake. Hope we can find them again!!
