Tackle Storage

Recommended Posts

For your price range check out the Plano 7915 (I think that's the model) or the Flambau Maximizer. The Maximizer it a bit bigger then the Plano. Gander and Cabelas have them both.

For more money there are some other opitions out there that are even bigger. Lakewood boxes come to mind.

You're probably like most of us and have a garage full of things we bought and upgraded later on!! grin.gif

If you're at all serious about muskie fishing, I'd recommend you do it right the first time and get a Lakewood or a Dunwright. If you're out a couple times a year and looking more for organization and storage, then there are others.

Just a warning, no matter what size you get, you'll have the uncontrollable urge to fill every compartment!!

Then buy more with more compartments, then fill all those compartments. After awhile you need to make room in the boat for all the Lakewoods...seats...don't need em. That will make room for another Lakewood with more compartments! smile.gif

I'm going to go against the grain and suggest the exact opposite.

Taking a ton of tackle can be so counter-productive. You could end up spending more time changing lures and looking in your lure box than you do fish.

I have a 2-gallon pail that holds 6-8 jerks and cranks plus 3 or 4 spinnerbaits. I have a large Plano, not a 3700, but the same style for my jigs and plastics. I have the same size plano for release tools and replacement hooks and leader making materials.

No matter the lake, there are 3 lures that I ALWAYS have. Those will probably be prerigged on rods. These are lures that I know how to work very well. They are definately my confidence lures.

In my small bucket, I have a couple of lures that are in the same family as my confidence baits and a couple that I want to experiment with and a couple that need to be "broke in." (if you fish non-sealed wood lures, you know what I am talking about.)

That's it.

I might not have the same lures in the bucket for every trip, Mille Lacs gets different lures than Big Detroit, but the idea is the same, think about how I am going to fish for the day and bring the appropriate lures.

When I was a noob, I spent waaaay too much time deciding what lure to throw. Now, I spend that time perfecting how I use the select few lures in my arsenal. You can't catch fish if a lure is not in the water.

If I can't figure out how to make a new lure work right within 10-15 casts, I hsolist it.

And, if I find a lure that I really like and it catches fish, I try to get more right away, before they are discontinued or darn near impossible to find.

take it for what it's worth

I should add, that the reason that I carry so little, besides not wanting to waste time looking for the right lure, is, if your lures are all in one box and that box gets ripped off the night before a big trip, you could be screwed.

I also just try to bring the lures that I will need in a smaller box and leave the Lakewood at home as my main storage box, this was tough at first, kind of a seperation anxiety thing, but I got over it.The smaller box that I use was actually the first that I bought and then recieved a big Lakewood 3 or 4 years ago. Seems to work out pretty good. I believe plano or flambeu make a box that will hold about 50 baits for around $50-60. I think it measures 13x13x22?
