I've been waiting for someone to post the news of young'uns. I was hoping I was going to be the one to post, but I'm glad to hear they're finally starting to show up. May they live long and grow many curls and keep makin' more for us grin.gif

Seeing those other ducklings got me motivated to go and check a couple of wood duck houses that had hens setting, both were gone, the only thing left was egg shells and a few unhatched eggs. The one nest actually had five unhatched eggs along with some shells, the hen must have jumped off too soon when the first ducklings came out. I was curious about those five eggs, so I broke them and one was rotten and the other four had developed ducklings in them. frown.gif Nature can be tough.

Blackjack,

May have been a 'dump' by another hen. I believe Dr. Roger Strand of the Wood Duck Society noted that some birds will 'dump' their eggs in anothers nest. This may include other cavity nesters like mergnasers.

Added 2 wood duck houses and 2 mallard houses to my pond. Saw some hens earlier in the year, then nothing. Thought none were getting used. Yesterday, saw first brood of woodies. She had 11! They were tiny tiny, so likely justed hatched. Will wait a couple of weeks to see what else happens. Very encouraging!!
