Motoer problem

danny berg

Question

Just replaced the impeller on the '74 15 horse Johnson, but the motor still dies after the motor is warmed up. Any suggestions as to what else might be the problem.
(Forgive my mis-spelling of motor in the topic title, dyslexic fingers.)

Thanks in advance

UJ
harder to start
Bogs down and rough start.
I have noticed that the bulb on the gas line is soft after running for a while, a couple of times I have had to squeeze the bulb again. I also have a 9.9 johnson and don't have this problem. I checked the fuel filter/screen and it looks clean. Also after changing the impeller I still don't have a water discharge, could the water tube up to the motor be clogged? This motor did sit for a while.

Thanks
DAnny

Danny,
I have a '74 Johnson 9.9 and they don't have an external water stream. "tell tail"
They're the same motor except for the carburetion.
Here's a link that might give you some good information on that motor.
I hope it's ok to post it here.

A couple observations on your outboard motor problems:

1. If the pump bulb gets soft and pumping it up helps the problem, the problem is likely the bulb itself. Try replacing the bulb and hose assembly. Any little leaks that can let air into the fuel line will cause the exact symptoms you have reported.

2. There shouldnt be a solid stream of water coming out of the engine, but there is a place at the back where the coolant water should be getting pushed out(overboard indicator hole). I would describe it as more of a spitting than a stream. Read over the link above, it really is a good maintenance reference, and it does describe the water spray that you are supposed to get out of the indicator hole. It also discusses how to clean out the passages to verify that the coolant water is flowing. Also note, I believe that the coolant will not exhaust until the unit warms up.

I have this same unit/same year and ended up repairing many various problems. I also was lucky enough to get an owners manual with it, so that has helped somewhat. Feel free to email me at [email protected] if you have any other specific questions.

Twitter,
Thanks for the link, it has a little more detail than the service manual.

Fishermn,
It is a brand new tank and hose. I don't have this problem with the 9.9, only with the 15 horse.
I also have the owners manual along with the service manual.

I printed out the pages from the link and will give her the old college try again this weekend, will give a report as to what I came up with.

Thanks,

Danny

We'll if you have 2 engines do you have 2 gas lines? I'd switch them, I know my johnson is senstive to this, primer bulb issue a quality replacement line "attwood" brand is only $15 at gander, Fleetfarm doesn't carry attwood, and the lines they sell are junk IMHO. Otherwise is could be a carb issue, I'd a full can of seafoam though the motor with a tank of gas, you can go as high as a full can to 3 gallons, but I run a can per 6 gallons every so often. it's amazing the difference it makes. Might not be a bad time for some new plugs too, there're cheap and easy to change, just make sure they are gapped right, and don't listen to anyone who says they are gapped correctly in the box, the last Bozo that told me that was wrong, really wrong.

When the motor dies, does it typically start right back up?

When it dies, does it bog out, or just quit?

If and when it restarts, does it idle rough at first and then smooth out, or is it like a normal start up?

Help me with these answers and I may be able to help you fix your motor. smile.gif

No I only have one line and tank for both motors, I have the 9.9 to use during duck hunting and the 15 horse I use for fishing. Actually I still have the old line I replaced this spring when I bought the new tank and line. I will give that a shot this weekend.(Takes me a few months to throw away old things).
But I still have the problem of the motor dying when it gets warm.

The previous advice is good.
I have more questions.
After the outboard dies and you squeeze the bulb back how does it run?
How does the outboard run when cold and how long does it take till the motor acts up?
Does the engine sneeze at all and when?
Have you changed the spark plugs?
When the engine is cold does it seem like both cylinders are firing then gets warm and starts running on one?
Have you looked at the plugs after it starts to bog to see if one or both are wet?
If so keep a note as to which plug is wet.
Answer these so I can go in the appropriate direction with more questions.

I also had similar problems with this same unit on another occasion. That time, if I recall correctly it was a problem with one of the coils. As the engine heated up the spark from one coil got real weak. This was hard to find. I belive I had to run it a while, then pull the coil wire off aand check the spark. You could see a noticeable difference between the spark from the two coils.

Surface Tension
Unfortunatly, I can't answer all these questions right now, because I didn't pay that close of attention when working on it last weekend, I will however work with it again this weekend and take notes. The spark plugs are new, there is less than 2 hours on them right now. I am sure I will have a big list of answers for you on Monday when I come in to work. As far as the hose and bulb thing go the bulb doesn't get soft all the time just every once in a while.

Thanks

Danny

I have a 15 hp johnson I think it is is a 80 's model. Sometimes when I am running it at full speed it doesn't seem to have the power it should. If I pull the choke out a little bit then it speeds up more. Other times it will run OK. Any ideas??????????????

Thanks Roger

Nutty; Check for an air leak. Maybe a vaccuum (?) line is loose. Finns
