opsirc
is there a way to connect two computers together with a cable, to transfer info from one to the other?O
0 Surface Tension
Yes there is. You can use a cross over cable and each puter would need a network card. Using the crossover cables eliminates the need for a hub. Another way is to buy a hub with straight through cables and an 10/100 network card. The advantage of the hub is you can join more then two puters together.
0 klbowe
Laplink, infrared. How much info ? USB memory sticks will hold quite a bit of data and they are coming down in price.Did you buy a new computer and are trying to copy your old files to the new one or does someone else have a file on theirs you need ? 0 gspman
Another option is an IOMega jazz drive. You might need an extra SCSI card though. While not real time you can store info on the drive and hook it up to the other computer. If you have one computer at the lake and one computer at home the jazz drive is very useful. 0 Hubcat
Open your help file and do a search for connecting. one of the choices should be connecting computer to computer. Here is what I got when I did a search in windows 2000DirectParallel cable accessThe DirectParallel feature in Windows 2000 supports computer-to-computer connections by using standard and enhanced (ECP) parallel ports, which use Parallel Technologies' Basic or Fast parallel cables. For information about configuring a direct network connection to use a DirectParallel cable, see To make a direct network connection by using a DirectParallel cable. Direct Cable Connection cables are available from several sources. You can obtain DirectParallel cables from Parallel Technologies or from their local dealers. For more information, see To contact Parallel Technologies or a local dealer to order Direct Cable Connection cables. To make a direct network connection by using a DirectParallel cableOpen Network and Dial-up Connections. Double-click Make New Connection, and then click Next. Click Connect directly to another computer, click Next, and then do one of the following: If you want your computer to act as the host (your computer contains the information you need to access), click Host. If you want your computer to act as the guest (your computer accesses information on another computer), click Guest, and then click Direct Parallel (LPT1) in Select a device.Follow the remaining instructions in the Network Connection wizard. NotesTo open Network and Dial-up Connections, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Network and Dial-up Connections.A direct network connection that uses a DirectParallel cable requires a stand-alone computer running Windows 2000. To create a direct network connection, you must be logged on as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group. For information about contacting Parallel Technologies or their local dealers to order DirectParallel cables, see Related Topics. 0 upnorth
If all you want to do is transfer your files on a 1 time basis to another PC, take the hard drive out of the PC that holds the wanted data and set it to slave and connect it to the cable on the 2nd PC. If you want to do this on going there are some other alternatives. You can go to radio shack and buy what is called a null modem cable, it is a special serial cable that will connect to PCs to each other. Or if both PCs have NICs in them you can purchase a cross over patch cable or a cheap hub and connect them. If you have specific needs post them, I can give you more details.
