replacing powerpro

Recommended Posts

How often do you guys replace your powerpro or similar superline? I change out my mono every year, but don't know if it's necessary with the superlines.

If you have the funds to replace it yearly it wouldnt hurt if it was in the sun and elements all summer but if you fished spearingly i dont think i has to be changed i have had the same 85lb on 2 of my trolling rods for a couple of years and they still get fish to the boat with no trouble that just my personal exprience. if its on a casting rod i would replace it if the wax coating is worn or gone. I think this was already suggested sometime ago by Jon P, but flip your line I did that this winter. Strip off the PP and respool again and SHAZAM!!! New line!!! Use plenty of Mono backing that cheap 20# stuff 250yds for .99 cents or whatever it is. That will make that PP go along way. Doing this I have been getting about 4yrs out my PP on a reel. grin.gif

Hiya -

As long as the line isn't physically distressed (nicks or frays) it basically lasts forever. High use you'll have to respool more often just because of wear and tear, occasional use, you're good for several years.

Not like back in the Dacron days. I used to respool 6-7 times a summer.

Like Jay said - reversing your line is a good way to get some more mileage out of the stuff. Only use the top 100' or so, so why not...

Cheers,

Rob Kimm

Oh yeah, definetly flip that stuff around, I perfer not to replace, cause line like PP is very stiff out of the box and the break in period sucks, now when that line has been used and somewhat abused, that's what I like nice and loose.

Try this to stop the dig ins.

This is what I do, it's little odd but works great. When I spool up I purposely over fill the spool. Then I tie one end off to a tree or pick-up then walk out the spool until its empty. Once you have an empty spool crank up the drag and start walking back to the tree while reeling, just like fighting a fish all the way back. This will put the base down super tight and the backlashes won't dig in very bad if at all.

This is how I flip my line in the spring or when its looking ragged.

Thanks for the info guys. My buddy does the tie-to-the-truck trick, and swears by it. Fishing opens tomorrow for the weekenders over here, I'll try chasing some 'eyes next week until the real fish opener on the 27th. Freezer's getting bare.

Did this last night, great way to meet the neighbors....walking down the drive, around the mailboxes, and across 5 driveways attracts some attention! Scary that the neighbors can tell you when you go fishing, how early you leave and late you return, how many rods are on the wall in the racks, etc!!

Works great, the reels line is spooled up nice and tight and looks/feels like new!!

Hey, that's a nice tip on spooling Power Pro tightly. Good thing I have three city lots and woods behind me. Well, the neighbors already think I'm nuts because of the strange noises I make to get birds to come closer to my camera, so I can't see this hurting at all. grin.gif
