Bear hunting

Recommended Posts

The number of apps is down over the last 5 years. It is a lot of work ecspecially for guys who don't live near thier hunting spot. I think the draw rate is quite high. I hunted a no quota area once, 2 hours into my first hunt I had my tag filled. It was fun, but I don't know if I'll do it again. I do have a beautiful rug and a video of hunt to remind me of the experience.

Setterguy, That baiting is going to cost me big bucks, but I can always turn my trip into a fishing/baiting trip grin.gif. what part of the state did you hunt for your no-quota bear, I'm not asking for the spot, just the area, I was thinking of doing that to if I don't get a tag..

Thanks for the info..

I have been drawn the last two years that i have put in apps. the zone that i hunt in doesn't seem to get enough people applying because the last two years the DNR has sold the remaining tickets over the counter after Aug. 1st.

I am 4 for 4 in apps. I agree that there is a lower number of people hunting with rising gas prices. I am glad I use a guide to do my baiting. Not sure if it saves me money but it sure is a lot easier then driving up north to bait or taking off of that much work.

not sure what area is up here in northern MN around the Baudette area but I applied once a few years ago and got drawn but I only went out one evening that year so it was kind of a waste of money for me ( not for the DNR ) But growing up in Ontario there was alot of bears around home and I only killed one bear with a bow and now there are to many other things going on around that time. I thought about applying but i got hooked on the early goose hunt which is just a few minutes drive from home and with my line of work I dont know if I would be able to keep up on the baits. But whoever gets drawn good luck to you and lets us know what you shoot this fall. Brian

We are paying $750 which gives us a 5 night hunt. He does all the baiting, hangs the stand, takes you into the stand and helps get the bear out of the woods. I have gone 2-4 using him, but most guys get one every year. My first year i was only in the stand 15-20 minutes. It is up to you were you want to stay. I camp out up there. We are in the Superior National Forest up from Tofte. There are some campgrounds that are free and some that cost 10-15 a night. There are also a couple resorts in the area. shoot me an e-mail with more questions. nathan at amborn.com

I have always done the dirty work and put out the baits myself. However, given price of gas, difficulty in getting bait, and lack of time was wondering if anyone knew of someone in zone 45, in the area north of Brainard who could be hired to bait. I have the land already set up. After reading longlines post that rate seems pretty fair.

ust an FYI if you are having problems finding bait Mikes archery in St. Cloud is selling bait by the 55 gallon drum. its a good deal and there bait worked well for me last year the baits were always getting hit except when i was on the stand. Those animals sure are smarter then some people think!
