Minn Kota Troubles

slotleft

Question

I've got a 97 Alumacraft Competitor Sport 170 with a 90hp. Johnson. It came with Minn Kota 42lb. thrust trolling motor. The motor has worked great since we've had the boat, up till this summer. When you press down on the foot control to turn right or left, the motor doesnt turn. If you spray some WD-40 in the connections, it works just like new...but for only a couple turns. Anybody got an idea what the prob might be?

I had the same problem with an older one and the control board was shot. I wound up just getting a new one since it was an "87" I didn't want to spend a bunch of money on an old trolling motor. I think is was gonna cost me about $100. Someone posted on another post on this forum that they bought and installed it themselves for $65, you may want to go that route.

Before buying anything new for the motor, I would try a better lubricant than wd-40. sounds to me like it's binding up and may need to be cleaned and lubricated.

I just had the same problem, and it seems it is very common. The problem is the board in the foot controll is shot.I got a new one for 79.00 in anoka. The dealer there told me he had 12 last friday and I got the last one on Wed. by the way, mine lasted 1 year is all,,

if its the foot control giving you trouble I would clean the grime off of the board and put some vasaline or a simaliar lube on the slider, push button places on board and the pivot points for the plastic in the foot control before purchasing a new board. If it still doesn't work your only out a few minutes as opposed to 70$. If its the main power disconnect I would inspect/replace the socket and receptacle. The one on my motor looked as though it had been warm once and the pins in the recepctle were sloppy maybe too much current draw at one time? it would quit, and work again if i wiggled the plug. i replaced the plug and socket (about 20$) and it works fine now.

Im spraying the connection between the Motor and the foot pedal. I take it out and it works fine, but quits after an hour or so. I thought it might just be the pedal wearing out, so I've been looking at those small belt clip controls at Cabelas that you can swap with the foot control. They run about $100.00.
