J.B WELD edequate?

CALVINIST

Question

Me and my brother just replaced the wood transom on my 16' boat, which has a 35 horse Johnson. The transom had so much "give" before repair that it created four fractures at four stress locations. Two of the fractures are on the aluminum sheet metal that holds the transom wood in place. One fracture is just to the left of the motor, and the other just to the right of it. Each is about three inches long. The other two fractures are on the tubular rim of the boat, at the location where the tubular rim was welded to the transom portion of the boat. Each of these are about three inches. My question is this. Since now the transom is solid and does not give at all, would J.B. WELD be adequate to hold those fractures in place, or should I seek someone who does aluminum welding? My brother said it would only cost $20-30 bucks to weld...does this sound right?

Thanks.

LB weld won't add any strength. You repaired the wood on the transom next step would be to have the cracks welded, thats where most of your structural support is. After that get something to stop the stress from the outboard as it bounces down the road like Transom Saver.

We've got a case of metal fatigue on our boat the aluminum is pulling a part midway between the hull and transom. Had it welded twice or three times and after hitting multiple waves or being out in big water it would always break right next to the weld (too much flex). Then we used the JB Weld and have not had a problem for the last couple of years
