Old Yamaha 4hp won't hold steady speed (2 stroke)

Howdy all...

I just broke out my canoe motor (1985 Yamaha 4hp, 2 stroke) for the first time in two years. Started on the second pull!!

It idles fine, but off idle it won't hold a constant speed. At about 1/4 to 1/2 throttle it will speed up a few hundred revs, then just run happy as a clam at the higher rpm. I can get it to come back down, but only after dinkin' with the twist throttle a bit.

What gives?

Clean the throttle linkage with a spray carb cleaner. Also grease any fittings you have on the tiller.

Hey there Mark...

Gee.... Is it THAT obvious? he he he.... I'm chompin' at the bit to get this thing "big water" bound....

The dern thing still won't hold a constant trolling speed. All cables, pullies, wheels have been cleaned and lightly lubed. The throttle turns effortlessly.

Could I have internal carb problems? It would be a good possibility since I can't honestly tell you if this motor was properly prepared for long term storage.... Seafoam time? Spray down the opening?

I still can't get this thing to troll down right. I've done about everything you can do without taking a wrench to it.

Any other suggestions?

Fuel pump....

Mixture out of adjustment....

I would think there are still some easy things to check that would take very little wrench work.

Get a repair manual
