Mossberg 935

[Whisker Trout Slayer]

Is there anyone here that owns and hunts with the Mossberg 935? I am considering buying the combo with deer barrel since I don't have enough money for a 1187 or a Benelli. I will be hunting deer, ducks and pheasant. Has there been any problems with it and does it perform well? I have a Mossberg 500 and it hasn't had any problems at all. I just want to upgrade.

I will not give you my opinion on this gun but I suggest that you do a very comprehensive investigation prior to buying it. I guess a good start is right here!!!! Also, do a search on the net related to reviews! Good luck!

Well I did a search and it was what I expected, a Chevy is better than a Ford or and a Ford is beter than a Chevy debate. Meaning for one person it is the greatest gun and has had no problems, while the next it has malfunctioned many times and is junk, and then the next person Mossberg is junk and would never own one.

Well if there is anyone out there that will give me the extra $200 fine I will go with a more expensive gun, so PM me if you are willing to gice me the cash!!

So jlm based on your post the way I am reading it you wouldn't get it? Is this based off experience or known experience from a friend?

I would,t bat an eye to buy a Mossberg.I own a 500 my self and it's been to the bottom of a lake,fell out of the trailer at 60MPH,hunted in -25 deg weather,snow and sleet,cattail hairs stuffed into it,used it as a paddle a few times,and I can't remember how many times my buddy threw a huge back of goose deks on to it.

I also shoot a Winchester Super X,a Browning Gold,and a Rmington 1100 in 20ga. and they all are good guns.Each has it's own problems at some time or another.

The Winchester and the Brownie do not like being dirty at all,the Remington doesn't like the cold or the snow.

But that old Mossberg just keeps bring down game,keep in mind this is an apple to an orange comparison though as the Mossberg is a pump and the rest are semi autos.

I read as much as I could find on the 935, and it is as you say the old this vs that .

But some of the more reputable gun magazines all had good things to say about it, and most of the authors were Benelli or Beretta fans.

You have to buy what you can aford to buy, later on if the Mossberg doesn't do what you want you can always sell it on GunBroker or on this forum.

If you shoot the 500 good, have you thought about buying a slug barrel for that gun for deer hunting, for ducks and deer, I feel more confident with a pump, especially ducks, those high priced autos aren't up for the abuse I put a gun through in the duck blind. Had a bad experience with my 1100 jamming deer hunting, first time and only time it has, but made me think twice about using it in - temps again. If you shoot your gun good now maybe save up some cash for another hunting season or two and you can drop it on an auto and still use your pump for the crappy days when its snowing and sleeting?

Benny thanks for the reply, I have a 500 and love and has never failed either. I am sure with all auto's they have to be kept clean or they will not work.

River rat- I have a slug barrel for it for deer season. A lot of people down here in Iowa during 1st season shotgun deer season had gun problems from the cold with their auotmatics.

Mossberg as a whole is a pretty good gun producer in my opinion. Good price for what you get! Like any company, an individual gun can have problems. If this is a trend, I would watch out. There are several out there that I would personally steer clear of. I don't know that the 935 is in the class as of yet. However, I do have first hand knowledge of one gun that was horrible. Jammed a lot right out of the box with numerous loads. The store took it back and refunded the money. With that, the gun guy provided some ineteresting insight into a "trend" that appears to be "beginning" related to this model. That is not to say that you won't be satisfied with it, like everything, there are good and bad in every batch. If you want this gun go get it. I would buy from someone who has a money back policy or exchange policy. go out and shoot the you know what out of it and if holds up, you have a winner. If not, take it back and get another. if you want a really good deal there is a baikal 3.5 inch auto in the grand rapids manney shopper for 289 bucks. it is an outstanding 3.5 inch auto, it cycles everything from light trap loads to the heaviest loads. ive used several of these guns and in my opinion they are amazing gun for the money.

I don't have 935 but I have an 835 pump. I bought it when they first came out. I have not had a single problem with it. I use it for shooting fast steel at waterfowl and it goes on every pheasant hunt as a backup. I never go hunting without 2 guns. I have never had to use the backup gun but others have. A thing to remember about the 835/935 is that they actually are 10 ga barrels with a 12 ga chamber therefore you cannot shot slugs out of them unless you purchase a slug barrel for them . It says right on the barrels not to use slugs. I have also heard that the 935 is made to shoot 3 inch and 3 1/2 shells and may not function with light loads. It is designed for heavy duty waterfowling. I'm happy with my 835 and have kept it all these years. I have gone thru other autoloaders and o/u but have always had the 835 to go back to.

If I am correct, that is the semi-auto. A buddy of mine has/had one and 1/2 ways into the season last year something broke inside of it (recoil spring?) and for some reason it is like pulling teeth to get a replacement part to fix it. Not sure of the whole story but I would beg, steal or borrow the extra cash to get a different brand.

I have the 935 and I love it.

I did have to send it in to have a new shell stop put in because it had a bad one. I have never had a problem with it since.

I also have the 835 and love that one also.

I also have a 1187 and love that.

I like the auto loaders.

Getting it fixed was no problem either, very friendly people
