Lac Seul June Walleye Techniques

Recommended Posts

My group has spent lot's of time fishing for pike on LS, but have never landed a super sized one. 18 lbs is the biggest my boat has ever seen. Most of the pike we've seen are 5 to 8 lbs. For pike we like to fish the wood of Sawmill and the rock piles and weeds of the Cox's Island area. Try some big bombers or the popular spoons like the red or yellow 5 of diamonds and big red eyes. The walleyes also like the bombers and will jump on them in or near the weeds. Once you pop a walleye keep working on them with the cranks as you are now in a position of pop a trophy.

The biggest challenge I've found to fishing LS in early to mid- June is the weather. Be prepared for some big surf, or cold weather. Sometimes the water is just unfishable. We've used just about every walleye presentation jigs, spinners, cranks, slip bobbers) that most people use and have caught fish with each. We use jigs the most. Fish -Guy gives you some good advice when he says to concentrate on the 7 to 15 feet water. The bite on LS can be streaky and what you think is the dead-sea can suddenly turn on. There will be lots of people around the resort, so ask for some info and most will be gald to help you. If you catch the lake on a strong bite you will be in for the trip of a lifetime. Otherwise you will have to settle for plain old excellent fishing.

Where are you going to be staying?

We will be going up to LS is late June again this year. We have been going out of the sioux lookout/hudson area for 6 years now. Great fishing every time. Have done the houseboat too, absolutely the way to go if you bring some people to share the cost it can be down right cheap for that type of fishing. We nomally go up there at least twice a year, usually late june and late july/early august. Plastics, cranks and minnows dominate in June and by the time they move a little deeper in July its crawlers and plastics more but minnows still take fish.

This June I am going to use more cranks like the Rapala X-rap. In 5-15 fow of water it takes all fish species especially walleye and smallmouths (rocks) nothern (weeds).

The gps is a must where we go and I was recently at cabelas and they now have a Navionics chip for Ontario that has contour lines for Lac Seul. Before this year all you could get was a Freedoms Map chip for Lac seul that had no depth lines. You still need to proceed with caution unless you know where you are going.

Please don't be afraid to try the plastics (GULP!, Munchies, b-fish-n lures)they to produce fish and last much longer. SOme times to the point it [PoorWordUsage]es of the old coggers I fish with that never sway from what papa taught them.

Good luck to every one even though you need none on Lac Seul. MNR also has indicated that there has been some real strong younger year classes that past 5 years which only means great things for the future. Please obey the regs. so I can share the great fishing with my new baby (coming in august) for years to come.

Hey WB how did you do near Taylors island last year. We really hit some bad weather both times we were there last summer.

I have been up there the last week in June for the last 2 years. We are going up again this year. 95% of our walleye fishing has been jig and minnow. Most of our spots are the type of spots where you are right over the fish, so vertical jigging fits well. I have done a little lindy rig, and used a little plastics instead of minnows, but when you are catching so many fish on a jig and minnow, its hard to switch!

This year I am planning to try some different techniques. Weather permitting, I might troll some cranks. Maybe try some leeches or crawlers. Maybe even troll crawlers with spinners. We will also spend more time musky/northern fishing this year.

I have been using the Freedom Map, but I’m interested in the new Navionics Map. How much does it cost? Is it all of Lac Seul?

Thanks to those with the input on the "Floating Lodges." I think I may try to do that one of these years. In the mean time, we've had a great experience staying at Lac Seul Resort which is down by Sioux Lookout.

Sconasotan - We made a couple runs up to Taylor Island last year. We were up there the last week in June. We had good success fishing around a bunch of those little islands just working back and forth in the areas where the wind had been blowing in.

We probably caught just as many fish down closer to our resort, but it was fun making a couple runs up to Taylor.

That's such an unbelievable lake. The fish just seem to be all over.

Some of the resorts may offer some type of camping, but as far as I know it is not legal to camp the lake shore or islands. It was put in place to help suport the resorts as to many of us Americans were camping instead of paying them for lodging.

And a few bad apples left thier garbage so we all got the blame.

We stayed at Timberlane in 2004 and went to Evergreen last year. This year we are going back to Timberlane, because the kids loved fishing off their dock. I believe Timberlane has built a couple of new cabins. We had a great time at both camps.

Walleyes and northerns depending on what side of the dock you were standing on. My boys' biggest walleyes were 25" and 26". After catching those fish, they were not interested in going out in the boat the rest of the week. It is so much fun watching kids catch quality fish like these. 79 days to go!!
